An elderly woman died Sunday after she was struck by a car while walking, according to city firefighters.

The unidentified victim was walking in the 19800 block of Buttonwillow Drive in Winnetka about noon when she was hit by a resident who was backing out of his driveway, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. She was declared dead at the scene.

Firefighters believe the driver, a 23-year-old male, is a neighbor of the victim.

Police are investigating the incident.
