Steve Lopez: The real outrage behind the Whitman 'whore' remark

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef013483a0868a970c-600wi

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef0133f4150cbe970b-pi All right, sure. I think we can all agree that it's inappropriate for either Jerry Brown or one of his staffers to refer to Meg Whitman, his rival, as a whore.

What are all the impressionable young students in civics classes supposed to think? Wait, do we still fund civics classes in California?

If you saw the story about a recorded phone conversation Brown had with the Los Angeles Police Protective League, whose endorsement he was shopping for, it's not clear whether it was Brown or one of his snarky minions who used the "prostitute" reference.

But here's the deal: The endorsement went to Whitman, who would have you believe that public-employee unions are public enemy No. 1 and that they've got Brown in their pocket, making him incapable of reining in spending or balancing a budget.

And yet Meg had agreed to exempt public-safety employees from a pension reform plan in which she would move state workers into 401(k)s. Yeah, she's tough as nails, but she'll sell her soul for an endorsement.

If "whore" is the wrong word for that, is "hypocrite" the right one? You be the judge.

Talk to me, California.

Steve, I think you are the whore.

Touché!

If "whore" is the wrong word to use? How about it is? I'm disgusted as a women. And I'm not a Whitman supporter.

"Hypocrite" is more powerfully condemning, as shown by the response to her hiring an undocumented worker while condemning others for hiring them. "Whore" or "prostitute" implies female sex worker. A trade with more integrity than Ms. Whitman enjoys.

I have been thinking about this since it was broadcast on the evening news. It seems to me that it was inappropriate to use this language, or rather to get caught using it on record, regardless of who said it. It makes Whitman look like the victim until one realizes that this exactly describes her behavior, although maybe whore is a bit strong to describe the degree of accomodation she will make for an endorsement. And then, Brown, as a career politician, can hardly escape being painted with the same brush. There must be similar "accomodations" in his record somewhere. The take-away to me is that, in the end, I think Brown will have made his point, although crudely, and Whitman's hypocracy revealed. She didn't vote, hired an illegal and did not handle the disclosure well, took pay or compensation under questionable circumstances at eBay and Goldman and now made a "back room" deal for political support. She's not looking all that electable to me.

Okay Steve I'll talk to you. Public employees should be exempt from those reforms. Firefighters and Police do the work no one else will. I could argue that makes them worth at least the SAME pensions as other public employees. However instead, they contribute MORE to their pensions than DWP, teachers, highway workers, and hosts of others.

Do they have a great deal? Sure. But they don't make much money during their careers and they count on that pension as the payoff for a lifetime serving others. Good for Ms. Whitman.

I don’t like Meg , but I cannot vote for Jerry Brown who inherited a surplus and left office with a huge deficit. Brown will make our problems worse.
How can Mr Lopez condone the vicious attack dog tactics against Republican women candidates? What evidence does Lopez have that Whitman cut any deals? Why not attack those who aimed sexual smears at Nikki Haley the GOP candidate for Governor of South Carolina?
The Democrats are xenophobes and anti-Indian American. Obama signed a bill sponsored by corrupt Senator Chuck Schumer of N.Y. more than doubling the costs for H1-B visas and proudly bragged that it was directed against Indian engineers who provide high tech services to American companies. I wish the author would do a story on how many Persons of Indian Origin are embracing the Republican Party because of constant slurs against women and Indian-Americans leveled by Schumer, Biden, Brown, and Obama himself. Republicans embrace us for our intelligence, academic achievements, family values and good citizenship. We are ridiculed by Democrats and Blacks for those same attributes. We don't allow our childern to listen to Obama's favourite thugs, Jay-Z or Lil Wayne's racist and deviant lyrics. Oama proudly told the Village Voice they are his favourites. What does that say about the Democrats attitudes of women?
Jerry Brown is the real "whore.

Meg Whitman is a complete “WHORE” according to the third definition in my Microsoft Works Word processor.
BOYCOTT ARIZONA ; })-

Words oftyen have more than one meaning. One of the definitions of whore at thefreedictionary.com:

A person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain.

Hey, if the shoe fits ...

The 911 rescue by fire fighters and law enforcement officers is a perfect example of why many people feel that these kind of civil servents deserve to retain their pension, but since they are in the class of civil servents, they should have their pension discontiued like everyone else. Under immigration law, illegal immigrant children and their family members should be deported just as illegal immigrant felons are being deported because these groups are both in the same class as illegal immigrants.Hence, the sanctuary cities and states are yeah, the W_s

dear Steve - big difference between fighting bad guys and fires and fending off paper cuts at the DMV

Speaking of whores.

THis is politics as usual which is why I won't vote for either candidate, especially Jerry Brown who ruined the state the first time he was elected. You lefties at the Times think we have a short memory. We don't and unfortunately our state is only going to get worse if either is elected. The only difference is that we'll fall quiciker if Brown is elected and the worst state legislature in the nation is re-elected to work with him.

I don't think it's fair to call her that, I mean we've seen the pictures. Not even Hugh Grant would go there. It's obvious that with the Bell City publicity, even billionairesses like Meg and Carly think it's worth spending a couple hundred million bucks to get the job. They'll make it all back by tax day.

When I was a kid I read something that may have been the truest statement I have ever seen. It said, "Lawyers, politicians and whore are in the same business. They all screw people for money."

Regarding Meg Whitman: If the clear heeled pumps fit, wear them.

May we ask which candidate you are voting for?

Whorocrit.

it is what it is . perhaps poor choice of words but...

What Steve said. But she's not only a whore, she pimped out California jobs to China.

I agree 100% with the Brown campaign!

Wow! This is big news! (Like Meg Whitman has never called Jerry Brown a bad name in a private conversation.) Right up there with the illegal maid story! (Like Jerry Brown doesn't have any skeletons in his closet.) How about the media keeping the actual issues in the forefront, calling candidates out when they lie, and generally doing its job, which is to inform the public?

"Whore" is definately the wrong word for Whitman.

In truth, she's the female equivalent of a "John," since she's the one spending millions of dollars for the opportunity to screw the citizens of California.

Steve, I appreciate your comments on the election issues, but it seems to me Meg is doing what most or all politicians do--regardless their party. Police and firemen, by virtue of the hazards in their jobs, get paid more, get better pensions, get better job benefits than employees who work in an office. In other words, they get a variety of exemptions. Either "whore" or "hypocrite" is out of place on this issue, unless the epithet is applied to all politicians of either party who have ever run for office. As a matter of fact, it is sinful to single out just one politician. They're all whores.

I think a better term would be "ho."

If a Republican had called Boxer a "whore", I'm most of the Democrats would have been calling for blood. Let's face it: the LA Times and most of its journalists lean left. When a right-wing candidate makes a mistake, they are all over it, such as when the latest storm over Whitman's firing of an illegal alien. When a left-wing candidate makes a mistake, they try to explain it away or minimize its impact. I don't like either Whitman or Brown. To me, it's pretty obvious that the LA Times is treating Brown's staff with kid gloves.
