Porn actor has tested positive for HIV; industry clinic officials confirm a quarantine is in effect [Updated]
An adult-film performer has tested positive for HIV at a Sherman Oaks clinic frequented by those in the porn industry, according to clinic staff.
"We do have a confirmed adult-industry performer who tested positive for HIV. We are quarantining and testing all exposed partners to the individual who tested positive for HIV," said Jennifer Miller, HIV/STD counselor at the AIM clinic in Sherman Oaks, where the person was tested.
Miller would not say the gender of the person, what companies he or she worked for, when the person was tested or whether AIM had notified state and county health officials.
"We’re doing what we can to notify the individuals involved," Miller said.
[Updated at 2:30 p.m.: The positive HIV test is the first reported since last year when an adult-film actress, who industry officials said had worked rarely, was infected with the virus. No one else in the industry was infected as a result.
It was unclear immediately how far reaching the implications were in the most recent case.
An outbreak among performers in 2004 occurred when an HIV-positive male porn star, Darren James, infected three female performers with whom he'd filmed sex scenes. James, who had recently worked outside the U.S., was not aware of his positive status at the time he performed.
The case announced Tuesday may fuel the continuing controversy over whether the industry does enough to protect performers.
Much of the testing for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV is done at the AIM clinic.
Clinic officials, together with porn industry leaders, have long promoted regular testing of porn performers for sexually transmitted diseases an an effective way to prevent the spread of disease.
But Los Angeles County public health officials and state occupational health officials say the widespread lack of condom use on porn sets puts performers at risk for contracting HIV and other diseases.
State officials are considering strengthening rules requiring condom use in adult movies filmed in California. The next meeting on the issue is scheduled for Oct. 25 in Oakland.
Although state officials maintain condoms already are required under workplace rules concerning the transmission of bodily fluids, they are rarely used in straight porn films because producers say they depress sales.]

I'm just curious (and I am not joking here) as to whether the HIV infected actors are entitled to recieve workers compensation benefits since they were infected while being on-the-job. Anyone have an answer to this question?

At least they're testing. Look who's screwed now...

Go figure!
Its unfortunate for someone to think that just because you had 1 or 2 negative HIV tests that its a negative for sure. If you have had unprotected sex and switch partners and have unprotected sex with the next person, you should never assume that your negative is not a positive until you test your self again and again and atleast up to the following 6 months to a year! This of course would only be assuring if you practice monogamy.
Hope the money these people earned was goon enough for their EARNED diagnosis!

so, are we supposed to be shocked.

All the sex industry will have to get retested!
Posted by: Joe | October 12, 2010 at 02:37 PM
Why do these people have sex outside the profession (maybe from a needle, well they should just try pot or snorting lines). If I was able to get that much sex from random people, I'd spend my time doing other things than having sex with random people.

Looks like another industry "state officials" want to shut down. If they insist on condom use, you can bet production will move to a state or country that does not require it.

You people are surprised? Why? Low IQ?
Posted by: Jane | October 12, 2010 at 02:44 PM
Way to go California, pass another law requireing condoms and you will simply drive another business from the state. One person give me a break. Take the same number of sexually active people in general population and probably more than 1 has contracted HIV. Knee jerk, pass another law, drive away another business.......get out the vote and ax the law makers.

I wonder how many of our elected officials are tested positive for HIV.

I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!

I'm a progressive person and believe people should be able to do what they want but if you can harm other people then you don't get to do what you want so why can't you require condom use? Couldn't they pass a law and be done with it?
Also why don't they make the minimum age of performers to 21? That way the youngest girls who make a rash decision that they later regret can get a little more time to make sure they really want to get a few hundred bucks in return for a life long regret.

This is really news? Like someone is supposed to be shocked that porn actors can contract HIV? Many of them don't even wear condoms for filmed intercourse and none of them, that I know of, wear any protection for oral sex. So why should anyone be surprised by this bit of 'news'. Besides, without knowing who the person is, this in nothing but rumor mongering. No names, companies, genders: someone, somewhere, at some point zero~converted. What a shocker!!!
This is HUGH NEWS!!!111!!!
By the way, I'm am truly sad that, in this day and age, ANYONE should be zero~converting. No one should be inflicted with the AIDS virus. Unfortunately, the porn industry insists on filming 'bareback' sex. Many gay films are 'bareback' these days. It seems as if people have chosen to ignore the lessons of the past. We all know what George Santayana wrote about that subject.

Was this not something everyone was expecting. Isn't it obvious? I don't know how you can prevent the spread unless the actors dont have sex during that period after the test until they film. Periodic testing just does not work.

1 Corinthians 6:9
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality.

to Jane: Yes I am shocked that his happen in the porn industry!!! LOL

as always when these stories come up, I have to ask:
Do any of you get tests from the guy you hook up with at the bar? or off the internet? I doubt it. And to those in the "industry"...dont ever do a shoot unless all performers involved have been tested by AIM. It is the number 1 red flag. If they dont use AIM, or worse if they have never heard of AIM, hang up!!!
to the question earlier regarding workers comp...there is no workers comp, payment is usually either under the table or 1099
