Authorities Wednesday afternoon recovered the body of a 22-year-old man who drowned in the ocean off Newport Beach.

The man and his girlfriend were playing in the surf about 1 p.m. near 18th Street when he was pulled out to sea, the Newport Beach Police Department said.

"It looks like the waves overtook him," said Sgt. Steve Burdette.

Lifeguard and Orange County Sheriff's Department rescue crews responded and saw the victim's body bobbing in the surf. The victim was pulled out of the water near 20th Street shortly after 2 p.m.

The victim's name was not released.
