Man dies after fishing boat overturns near Santa Monica Pier

A 52-year-old man died and another was injured Saturday near the Santa Monica Pier after their boat struck the breakwater and turned over, authorities said.

Lewis Anderson of Anaheim and another male in his 50s had been fishing when their boat lost power and ran into the breakwater adjacent to the pier about 8:30 p.m., said Santa Monica Police Sgt. Thomas Burgess and a Los Angeles County Coroner official.

Both men were thrown into the water and attempted to swim ashore. Harbor patrol officers responded and retrieved the men, Burgess said.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate Anderson, who was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The other man was treated for hypothermia.
