Man awaiting trial for murder of Apple Valley couple dies in jail

October 22, 2010 | 11:01 am

A 59-year-old man has died in a San Bernardino jail while awaiting trial for murder.

Harold Toney was arrested in Kentucky in September and charged with the 1988 double murder of an Apple Valley couple.

Toney was terminally ill with cancer and died Thursday at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials said.

He was charged with the murder of his boss, Hulon Hughes, and Hughes’ wife, Elaine, after an argument at the couple’s Apple Valley home.

San Bernardino sheriff’s detectives had arrested him in 1988, but he was never charged. The case went cold until earlier this year when detectives linked him to the killing through DNA evidence.
