Suspect in officer-involved shooting in Watts dies at hospital

October 7, 2010 |  7:55 pm

A male suspect who allegedly pointed a gun at Los Angeles police in Watts died Thursday night after he was shot by at least one officer, police said.

The shooting in the Imperial Courts housing projects prompted the Los Angeles Police Department to declare a tactical alert after an angry crowd formed.

The suspect was pronounced dead at St. Francis Medical Center, the LAPD said. His name and age were not released.

Police said a weapon was recovered from the shooting scene near 114th and Grape streets.

The incident began shortly after 5 p.m. when officers patrolling the housing projects encountered a group of males. One of them ran away, according to police.

The officers chased the suspect. He pointed a gun at the officers, prompting at least one of them to open fire, according to the LAPD.

More than 50 squad cars responded to help with crowd control. The tactical alert was canceled at 6:45 p.m.
