Jaywalking woman hit and killed near Vernon

October 29, 2010 | 12:37 pm

A woman jaywalking Friday morning on a street near Vernon was hit and killed by a driver.

Monica Campos, 18, was walking across Downey Road near Slauson Avenue in an unincorporated area about 6:30 a.m. when a pickup truck struck and killed her, said Officer Luis Mendoza, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

“It was an area with very bad lighting,” he said. “The driver never saw the pedestrian until it was too late.”

An investigation was ongoing, but Mendoza said charges probably will not be filed.
