Dozens in L.A. arrested in federal Medicare fraud crackdown

Hundreds of federal agents fanned out Wednesday morning across Southern California to serve warrants in a coast-to-coast crackdown on healthcare fraud.

An estimated three dozen people have been served with arrest and search warrants locally, but federal officials said the crackdown extends across the country. They declined to immediately offer specifics about which locations were being targeted.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said that more than 400 agents participated in what she described as "fraud of the Medicare system through identity theft."

Most of the arrests -- but not most of the indictments -- in the operation are taking place in Los Angeles, Eimiller said.

Officials plan to provide details at a news conference at the federal building in Westwood. Other federal jurisdictions also are expected to release details of indictments related to the operation.

It is great that there is a crack down on fraud... maybe now, they will go after Meg Whitman's maid (and the other Brentwood moms maids that Hector Tobar reported on last week!). I think the tears have dried up a little by now.

Too many people get into medicine for the money. The doctors at Loma Linda do it for the love of mankind. They are the best.

It would be better if this was a no-bail crime. Unfortunately, these scammers get out immediately and do this or some other scam. Take them off the streets for a while, especially the Doctors.

It will stop when they realize it's not a slap on the wrist.

Wait a second, there may be a marijuana plant living still in California.

So what's the FBI doing looking into systemic and massive society-destroying fraud?!

Here is the US Government's complete list of priorities, in order of importance:

1. Marijuana eradication.
2. Um, yeah. Marijuana eradication.

yeah good because theres just too much of that fraud going on in medicare and the doctors dont even seem to care about the patients anymore. Dont go into medicine if you dont genuinely care about people because We the People are on to it.

Good! Now go after the pharmacies and doctors who knowingly treat these people and push their drugs.

TENS of THOUSANDS more to go!

Disgraceful.
And who pays for this?
We all do . . .

Most of the "doctors" will be chiropractors. There are two schools in LA that turnout these quacks who make a living by scamming publicly health insurance programs.

Hallelujah. They did a special on this on Dateline or 60mins or something. People buy old pharmacies to inherit Medicare info from previous customers so they can charge Medicare for bogus prescriptions. The victims didn't have to pay for anything because the meds were covered by Medicare, but many complained. The Feds never came to check the validity of the "filled" prescriptions, even after victims' complaints. So yes, it's about time they cracked down!

I have an elderly friend who is encouraged to buy diabetic shoes and stockings on Medicare, even though she already has what she needs and doesn't want any more. I don't understand why this is happening, and neither does she. She refuses to accept things she doesn't need, but someone in the system keeps pressuring her to take them.

Three dozen down, about thirty thousand to go. Los Angeles is probably the fraud capital of the U.S.

This is happening all over our country and is to be expected with big government.
Just wait until ALL MEDICINE is controlled by big government!!!!!

Soon all the patients and doctors will be begging on their knees to the corrupt politicians for our health care needs. A government politician will stand between you and your doctor. Vile, lying politicians will determine who gets treated and who does not get medical treatment. So if you want this kind of medicine call a lawyer.

They could prosecute dozens of fraudsters in Glendale alone. Medicare Fraud seems to be the Armenian National Sport

To NRB: It's not big gov't that's committing the fraud........... It's greedy, corrupt individuals taking advantage of a gov't program.

To NRB: Big gov't isn't committing the fraud. Greedy, corrupt individuals are the ones taking advantage of an obvious broken program.

It’s not about nationality, it’s about greed. Like our Banks. Governmental statistic says Medicare lose is 60 Billion a year, because of fraud. And the news is about 35M only (billed $163M but got paid $35M). What about the rest of it-$59,965 Billion ($59,965,000,000.00). Hospitals, Insurances, Doctors? Any idea?
What about overbilled Patients? Open heart surgery in Europe (Spain, Germany, etc.) is $30-$50K only and in USA - $189K. Why? Liver transplantation $115K-$165k and in USA - $500K. Why?

Armenians yes They stolen $1 billion from MediCAL 1999
