September 2, 2010 |  2:09 pm

San Diego County sheriff's deputies are searching for a young man believed to be in his mid-20s who assaulted a deputy at the Del Mar Racetrack.

Deputy Matt Clay was helping another deputy take a disorderly conduct arrestee into custody when the man, part of a small crowd that followed the deputies, blindsided Clay with a punch to the face. Clay was knocked to the ground and later was taken to the hospital.

The 15-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department will require surgery for a "significant injury," said Sheriff Bill Gore. The attacker escaped "into the anonymity of the crowd" after the incident, which occured Saturday.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Department's Encinitas station, (760) 966-3527.
