A man struck and killed by a southbound Amtrak train shortly before midnight Saturday has been identified as a 46-year-old resident of Palm Springs, the San Diego County medical examiner's office said.

Roger Lee Bailey was attempting to cross the tracks by running under a closed crossing arm when he tripped and was struck at 11:56 p.m. Saturday by a train bound for San Diego.

His body was thrown "a short distance" and he was declared dead at the scene of "multiple blunt-force injuries," according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
