Southern California's summer to end with a chill: It was the coldest in decades

Farewell summer, we hardly knew ye!

The last day of summer is Wednesday, but meteorologists say the season barely bothered to show up in the region this year. So cooler fall will make an almost noiseless entrance Thursday, hardly indistinguishable from the summer Southern Californians just experienced.

“Summer played hooky on us. It never really showed up,” said Bill Patzert, a climatologist for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Canada Flintridge. “We leaped from spring to fall.”

Patzert said a low-pressure trough that stalled along the West Coast from Alaska to southern Baja California kept the summer cooler than usual, with many overcast days. Monthly temperatures in downtown Los Angeles from April to now have averaged between one to three degrees cooler than normal.

Patzert said it’s one of the coolest summers in decades.

Jamie Meier, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Oxnard, said that LAX tied the coldest average temperature for August on record, going back to 1944.

The Santa Barbara airport also broke a record for coolest August, she said. The weather service is predicting a La Nina cycle that could mean drier-than-normal conditions. That isn’t always the case during La Nina, said Meier. But more often than not it is, she said.

Thoughout the summer, communities across Southern California set record low temperatures, notably Los Angeles International Airport and other coastal areas.

how do you people know what the temps are around the world, do you love everywhere? have you been everywhere? probably not.. In my life it has been a cooler summer, and my parents and grandparents from from here (LA) too. And, yes, I have lived in other countries too... but I still haven't been everywhere,, I can only vouch for where I go and live..

Looks like Algore is having another climate summit in the LA area.

@ Robert...

You mean we don't understand the "science" that the Global Warming Cult of ecogolgists still haven't PROVEN, or the "science" that the Global Warming Cult has fabricated?

Choose one please, because there aren't any others.

Yup... all you righties keep denying to yourself global warming isn't happening. What does it matter to you. Your grandchildren will be the ones spitting on your grave for not heeding to the warning signs of our environment's destruction leaving them an inhabitable world. Or better yet you'll live in a country where people will be tearing each other apart for the few remaining drops of oil while countries like China, India and the rest of Europe thrive from economies that pioneered green technology. Yup just keep your position on global warming while your own demise grows nearer and nearer.

Global warming creates unpredictable weather patterns that may cause cooling in other areas and extreme warming in others. This is one of the reasons we've been experiencing "weird" weather lately, because of kinks caused by the global warming phenomena. Worldwide, we've experienced another increase in global average temperature, so don't let isolated cases of "cooling" fool the nonbelievers... -__-

Climate change is not a "scientific fact". Science does not offer facts it offers theories. The only fact that is not even denied by the lunatic left is that the scientists behind the global warming hoax made up numbers. Even those liars that did it admitted that much. So don't go ranting about deniers... the only deniers are the lunatic left that deny it is a hoax.

Those advocating for climate change refuse to acknowledge a few facts that might destroy their theories.

1. Since accurate records began every continent bar Asia has recorded its all time record cold temperature since its all time record warm temperature.
2. Russia last winter recorded its second coldest temperature on record.
3. Despite dire warnings, there have been fewer - not more - major hurricanes since Katrina.
4. Sydney Australia this southern winter recorded its coldest temperature since 1940.
5. Unusual cold weather and snowfalls in New Zealand have killed 15% of young lambs.
5.Melbourne Australia has this southern spring yet to record a temperature of 68 or more. The first 68 is usually in late August.
6. South America has had record cold temperatures this southern winter.

With all of these facts, combining with what has happened in the US, I can't see how some scientists claim this is the hottest year on record.

One of the factors affecting temperature measurement is the location of measuring equipment. In many places they have moved from green sections of the cities to near airports. This brings in the effect of sun on concrete. Look at where the Los Angeles equipment has moved over the past 100 years.

I approve of my past two postings.

the useful-idiots on the left cling to global warming like grim death ...

funny, really

The southern california cold summer was not caused by some trough along the west coast. That trough was there for reason, the reason being the La Nina
coming on so strong ( unseen by NOAA's model until it actually was occurring)
and the turn of the PDO to cold, which will have climate cooling ramifications over the next 20-30 years. This was no accident and west coast residents should get ready for cooler summers overall during coming decades. Inherent in this is a drier overall weather pattern in southern California, and since the population now is almost 3 times greater than what it was in the 50s when the PDO last turned colder.. this spells plenty of wildfire problems. I am saying this before hand, so when the decrease in rainfall and increase in dry problems occur, we dont hear the pat reason du jur shoved down our throats..
global warming... oh sorry I mean climate change... ooops got me again.. global climate disruption. You have the forecast idea, lets see who is right over the coming years.

BTW get ready, Monday may be the hottest day of the year... a few days of heat on the way to remind you of what summer could be.

I've often wondered if global warming could temporarily result in unanticipated local microclimate changes - like cooling in some spots because of changes in cloud patterns. In the global warming debate, everyone is focused on the macro, but eventually someone will need to drill down to specific areas and their patterns.

Consider: The AVERAGE temperature this year is only 1 to 3 degrees cooler and therefore is considered record setting(in a cold sense). Hmmmm, does that not mean that the temperatures in the prior summers had to remain remarkably consistent for many years to achieve the AVERAGE from which we've departed?

Now, I thought Anthropogenic Global Warming meant that the ENTIRE planet's temperature has been rising for many years(& continues too) do to human beings. If that's indeed the case, then shouldn't the AVERAGE temperatures this summer have to deviate significantly more than 1 to 3 degrees to even come close to matching the records for coolest summer on record?

Oh wait a minute, that's right. AGW doesn't exist anymore. None of this matters. We've transitioned into the era of Global Climate Disruption.

"Global warming" strikes again!

Here we go ago again! weather isn't climate blah blah blah HEY climate changes how about using scientific criterion to establish your Claims of global warming ... just as Einstein did for his theory of relativity - they are of equal importance are they not?

You know, Kevin Martin, a meteorologist from the Southern California Weather Authority, predicted this below normal summer, right? Why don't you ask him HOW he did it, not ask Patzert, someone that didn't even forecast it.

If this had been the hottest summer on record, it would have been reported far and wide, and the climate disruption lobby would be screaming from the rooftops how this settles the science.

Global Climate Disruption™

Please send 20% of your income in taxes to Al Gore and the UN so they can make the climate just perfect for all of us. Trust them.

Maybe the LA Times might actually allow a post by me at some point!

So in hopes this might finally be it; Isn't the climate ALWAYS changing, always in flux? Wouldn't that make the phrase "Climate Change" as about as useful and practical as stating "water is wet"?

And, if climate change is such a horrid thing, then what would be the outcome from the desired stability of climate? No rain in your location or constant precipitation? cloudy or clear? 32 degrees or 87 degrees? snow or sun?

Is the goal to stop climate change entirely? or is there some other target....................................................................?????????

The "global warmers" always seem to forget that the Earth has been warming off and on for the last 12,000 years, since the last ice age.

They also forget that is was warmer 1000 years ago, on average, that it is today, during the Medieval warm period.

They also forget that CO2 levels were once much higher that they are today, before fossil fuels were used for energy.

All they seem to remember is was Al the Hoaxer tells them.

This has less to do with "Global" whatever than a temporary shift in the wind patterns. This year, the wave is swinging low in the west bringing cool weather which is also somewhat dry. Back east, the opposite is true and there have been a number of high temperature records busted there. I recall a couple of times when the wave ran the other way allowing me to work on a tan in January in Colorado Springs while the folks back east were freezing and spraying water in the citrus groves.

Remember folks....

Back in the 70's it was "global cooling."

That didn't pan out, so a decade or so later.....they presented "global warming."

Well, after the curtain was pulled back, and all of their little "tricks" and "hockey sticks" didn't fly......they changed it to "climate change."

That wasn't quite doing it for the masses, who now are coming to the realization that they have been conned.

The latest, and greatest, of course is "global climate disruption."

Starting to see the pattern here?

I thought you would.....

I wondered how many conservative amateur climatologist would chime in on this. Science for these lucky few is based on personal observation without any empirical data to back it up. Science makes your head bone hurt don't it?. One of the coolest summers on record proves global warming is in fact, a vast left wing conspiracy, right? So we are the kooks on the left, well sadly you folks on the right are a bunch of tools being punked by moneyed right wing elites.
