Interstate 215 in Riverside closed to investigate bridge damage

September 7, 2010 |  8:36 am

Southbound Interstate 215 will be closed until 3 p.m. Tuesday in Riverside as Caltrans crews investigate possible damage to an undercrossing, authorities said.

Most lanes on the freeway will be closed from just south of the interchange for the 60, 91 and 215 freeways to south of the Chicago Avenue undercrossing.

The southbound Interstate 215 flyover connector to the eastbound 60 Freeway also will be closed to protect motorists during the investigation.

Several chunks of concrete fell from the undercrossing onto Chicago Avenue early Aug. 31.

Crews have patched the bridge, but need to determine what caused the damage and whether more repairs are needed, said Caltrans spokesman Jason Goldman.

"The bridge is structurally sound," he said. "If it wasn't, it wouldn't be open to traffic."

The damage is unrelated to a multicar accident that occurred later that day in the same area, Goldman said.

Caltrans suggests the following detours:

  • Take the westbound 60 Freeway connector to the Market Street exit, turn left, go under the freeway and turn left onto the eastbound 60 Freeway. Continue east on  the 60 to southbound Interstate 215.
  • Continue south on Interstate 215 to the westbound 91 Freeway. Take the Mission Inn Avenue exit, turn left, go under the freeway and then turn left onto the eastbound 91 Freeway. Take the connector on the right to enter southbound Interstate 215 and the eastbound 60 Freeway.

More closures are likely; check twitter.com/caltrans8 for updates.
