SWAT officers still searching for shooting suspect at Torrance apartment complex

August 22, 2010 | 11:07 pm

SWAT teams were searching a Torrance apartment complex late Sunday night for a man suspected of shooting and killing a neighbor.

As officers picked their way through the sprawling, block-long complex, at 4023 242nd Street, near Hawthorne Boulevard, some were using bullhorns to try to contact the alleged assailant, according to Torrence police Sgt. Jeremiah Hart. A crisis negotiating team was also on scene, he said.

Residents reported hearing gunshots about 3:40 p.m., Hart said, and officers arrived three minutes later to find an unidentified man with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

Because witnesses said they didn’t see the suspect — described as a middle-aged Latino — leave the complex, police assume he is still there.

Residents remained locked in their homes during the operation, as they had been for much of the day. Police officials placed reverse 911 calls to residents after the shooting and ordered them to stay indoors.

The SWAT team began its search just after 10 p.m.
