Suspect who stabbed woman, possibly set house on fire sought in Whittier area

Authorities searched Wednesday for a suspect who stabbed a woman and possibly set a Whittier-area house on fire.

The fire was reported about 12:30 p.m. in the 8300 block of Vanport Avenue in unincorporated Whittier, said Inspector Don Kunitomi, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

A woman ran out of the home after what appeared to be a domestic dispute, said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman had stab wounds and was taken to a hospital, Whitmore said.

Firefighters knocked down the fire in about 40 minutes, but authorities were waiting to ensure the structure was safe and cleared of the suspect who may have stabbed the woman and ignited the fire, Whitmore said.

At one point, it was believed a suspect may have been barricaded inside, authorities said.
