Man, 21, girlfriend, 14, arrested in slaying of Rosemead grandparents

A 21-year-old man and his 14-year-old girlfriend were arrested Thursday on suspicion of fatally stabbing the girl's grandparents in their Rosemead home, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies found Jack Dell Benzer, 70, and his wife, Susan Diane Benzer, 64, in their bed with multiple wounds to their upper torsos, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The couple's Nissan was missing. As detectives conducted their investigation, they discovered that Rodolfo Lopez and his girlfriend allegedly stole the vehicle and were fleeing to Texas, Lt. Mike Rosson said. The girl's name was not released because of her age.

Texas authorities were alerted, and the two were apprehended in El Paso County. Lopez was booked  on two counts of homicide and auto theft, and the girl was booked on auto theft charges, Rosson said.

"The residents of the Rosemead area can rest a little easier tonight knowing that the suspects are in custody," said Rosson, who added that he was "saddened at the tragic loss of these two community members."

Since January 2007, at least 15 slayings have been reported in Rosemead, according to a database compiled by the Times' Homicide Report.

Too bad Lopez can't be tried and executed in Texas instead of being shipped back to California where he'll spend the next 30 or 40 living in luxury at the taxpayer's expense. Time to seal off that border.

More Latino men screwing underage girls. He is a pedophile , rapist and now murderer. Time and time again we see these guys are violent and cannot control their sexual impulses enough to avoid hooking up with minors. Close the border to keep these animals out

21 and 14?

In addition to first-degree homicide, nail the guy for statutory rape and/or annoyance. We have age of consent laws in this state to protect young teens from exploitation and manipuation by significantly older partners. Clearly this is the case here.

The girl is no prize herself. Throw her in jail for murder.

And where in this article does it say Lopez is an illegal? Nothing in this article even implies that.
Not everyone with a hispanic name is an illegal, many are 3rd, 4th generation American citizens.

I personally know one of the children of this couple. It is really sad to hear about this.

I don't know why people here are arguing over what ethnicity the man is... that has no relevance to the situation. If anything of this story should be scrutinized, it's the fact that their 14 year old grand daughter is involved...

Not only is this incident tragic and sad - but all the comments here are disgusting....

It' s a damm tragedy that things like this happen, and yes lopez should get the death penalty. What I dont understand are these comments left by jim q and "obama" these two idoits, act as if latinos are the only ones who murder! People south of the border are not animals! That is just being ignorant, racist and stupid

I hope this isnt the Rudy i know, i grew up with this guy and never in a million effen years would i have thought that this dude could be even capable of participating in such acts. Never. The only plausable explanation is that heavy pot smoking transcended into other heavy drugs. So sad, this got me down.
