Mel Gibson domestic violence probe to be completed by week's end, official says

L.A. County sheriff’s detectives plan on wrapping up their investigation into domestic violence allegations against actor Mel Gibson by the end of the week, an official said Tuesday.

Accusations that Gibson hit his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, surfaced more than a month ago. Soon after, the department also began investigating claims that Grigorieva or someone close to her was attempting to extort money from Gibson.

That extortion investigation also is expected to be completed soon, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

After detectives have finished their investigation, they will pass their findings on to the Los Angeles County Dist. Atty.’s office, which will decide whether to press charges.

“Our goal is to give it to them by the end of the week,” Whitmore said.

He declined to comment on their findings so far. Evidence reviewed by detectives includes text messages and e-mails between the couple and interviews with Gibson and others.
