Apartment complex evacuated as Torrance police search for gunman [Updated]

August 22, 2010 |  7:14 pm

Torrance police are searching for a shooting suspect they believe to be at large in an apartment complex where he allegedly shot and wounded another man Sunday afternoon.

[Updated at 7:31 p.m.: Police say the victim, who was shot multiple times with a handgun, was pronounced dead at the scene. “We are now proceeding with this as a homicide,” said Sgt. Jeremiah Hart of the Torrance Police Department.]

Search teams and SWAT officers are combing the upscale complex at 4023 242nd street, near Hawthorne Boulevard, looking for the shooter and evacuating residents, according to Sgt. Jeremiah Hart. Officers have surrounded the block-long complex, and a crisis negotiation team is also on the scene, he said.

Residents reported hearing gunshots about 3:40 p.m. Sunday, Hart said, and officers arrived three minutes later to find an unidentified man with gunshot wounds.

Because witnesses said they didn’t see the suspect — described as a middle-aged Latino — leave the complex, police assume he is still at large in the sprawling, two-story development.
