ESPN's Jay Mariotti released from jail on $50,000 bail [Updated]

ESPN personality and sports columnist Jay Mariotti was released from jail on $50,000 bail Saturday, hours after being arrested on suspicion of felony domestic assault, authorities said.

Mariotti, 51, was arrested Saturday around 4 a.m. following an argument with his girlfriend, authorities said.

Mariotti is a well-known sports commentator who can be seen on the ESPN show "Around the Horn." He also writes for a sports website called Fanhouse.com where he is known for his outspoken views criticizing athletes for their actions on and off the field. He formerly wrote a sports column for the Denver Post and the Chicago Sun-Times.

LAPD sources said Mariotti allegedly got into an argument with his girlfriend at a club in Santa Monica, and they were observed exchanging harsh words just before getting in a car to leave. Mariotti got angry after he believed his girlfriend had been flirting with another man, police sources said.

The argument continued at the couple's apartment near Venice where Mariotti allegedly pushed and shoved the woman. During the altercation, Mariotti grabbed her arm, leaving marks, the sources said.

Police were called to the apartment and found his girlfriend, who has not been identified, with cuts and bruises.

Mariotti was held at the 77th Street station before being released midday Saturday.

[Updated 1:20 p.m.: ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said he was just becoming aware of the incident and had no immediate comment. Mariotti did not immediately respond to requests for comment. ]

Not sure if he should be charged for a felony for grabbing her arm, but whatever. Two sides of every story, what about the woman's involvement in the incident?

Another class act.

Jay Mariotti, the latest in a long and never-ending line of sexual predators and domestic abusers at George Bodenheimer's ESPN shop in Bristol.

I don't believe that. Why would Mariotti's girlfriend flirt with another man.

I hope you own up to your bad behavior given your views on bad behaving athletes. The Elliot Spitzer syndrome - outraged by your own demons. You haven't been listening. It isn't the referees fault baby. I hope you learn something from this. Time for a life check-up.
Something tells me you are on a downward slide (former this and that; girlfriend; jealousy; clubbing; booze) only you can stop it. Get some help.

Karma for making fun of people who have claustrophobia and can't get through an MRI.

I'm not saying she deserved to be assaulted, but the man she was flirting with was Abe Vigoda. Now that's an insult.

Jay Mariotti has to be the biggest weasel in sports, and he's not even an athlete.

Just sounds like a case of competitive banter to me.

Women are promiscuous these days and the LAPD is turning into a feminized department!

$50,000, that's no "I think we had a misunderstanding " bail, even in LA.

What is Jay doing with a girlfriend at age 51.e should have a wife, 3 kids, and a picket fence by now. What is wrong with USA?

Jay is the worst type of journalist - a muckraker. Thank goodness this hypocrite has finally been identified for what he is: a woman beater. Disgusting. I hope that this means that we never have to listen to his holier-than-thou shtick ever again.

I want to see the spin he puts on this...The way that he blasts athletes for their personal issues on tv everyday....I hope some athletes take some shots at him now.

It's so funny how you people who have commented so far talk about a holier than thou attitude that JM has while at the same time are talking with that same kind of bravado. Get off your high horses. He hasn't been convicted of anything. Innocent until proven guilty. When that happens, call him names all you want.

Danna na, danna na

@ Tony: Innocent until proven guilty is all well and good, however Mariotti has a well-documented history of unjustifiably throwing people under the bus. In other words, "live by the sword, die by the sword".

'Nuff said.

holier than thou hypocrite, glad to see him get his. I read a few years ago that his wife had cancer. Has she passed away, or did he bail on her like a rat and is now out alley catting? I hope his victim is OK. You can bet that before the week is up, the eastern seaboard programing network is going to drop him quickly

what I want to know is why is he booked at 77th station when he lives in venice. isn't pacific station or even lax closer than 77th? just curious.

ESPN's record with women, including assaults and serious harassment, is the stuff of legend. Since meeting Mariotti, I've wondered how they could employ such a world class d-bag. Perhaps that question will come to an end soon?

Who's on the hotseat now? Explain your actions! Should Jay Mariotti be banned from the Writers Hall of Fame for his actions or maybe he was using performance enhancing drugs and had a moment of rage. Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds, Bret Favre and a host of other athletes you have unfairly crucified over the years are not feeling to bad now. It's called KARMA. Jay the shoe is on the other foot, maybe now you can look at all athletes and realize they are as human as you are and are prone to mistakes or moments like this.

If your female companion is or was disrespecting you like suspected then it is time for Jay to move on. If I was you I and had your writing skills I would ask the police officer if he would allow you to write the report. There is one thing going for you and that is there are two sides to every story. Good luck in the court proceedings.

can't wait to watch around the horn on monday

First Jeremy Green, now Jay Marioti..... what's next from the MotherShip?

"It was arrogance that doomed Mariotti, raw defiance feeding a blind and reckless narcissism. He thought he could reach back and beat her, bullying a girlfriend with the same attack-dog force that led to a call from George Bodenheimer to join Bodenheimer's Band of Sexual Predators and Abusers at ESPN. ... What he didn't understand was a basic tenet of life. No one stares down and strikes out the truth, not even a pundit with the 'all-powerful' Bodenheimer, maker of broadcasting careers and supporter of Hannah Storm's school girl prostitute outfits on air, as his personal career sugar daddy."

She found out that Ozzie was right.
