Coast Guard searches for a missing boater off Catalina Island

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department searched Sunday evening for a 45-year-old man reported missing off the coast of Santa Catalina Island, according to the Coast Guard.

Frank Cipriano had been missing since about 10:45 a.m., when his shipmates on The Indecent Proposal, a vessel anchored in Cherry Cove, woke up and didn't find him on board, said Coast Guard Lt. Ana Thorsson.

The Indecent Proposal's dinghy was found about a mile away in Eagle Reef. Cipriano is reported to be about 160 pounds and wearing a polo T-shirt and black board-shorts, according to the Coast Guard.

The search will continue through the night if necessary, Thorsson said.
