'40 Year Old Virgin' actor facing trial in girlfriend's stabbing

A trial is scheduled to begin in San Diego County on Monday in the case of a veteran Hollywood actor accused of attacking his girlfriend in 2008.

Shelley Malil, 43, best known for his performance in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," is accused of stabbing his girlfriend 23 times, leaving her in critical condition.

Malil, of Sherman Oaks, was detained as he got off of an Amtrak train in Oceanside.

He was traveling to meet with his attorney in preparation for turning himself in to police, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The attack occurred on Aug. 10, 2008, and the trial will occur at a courthouse in Vista.
