A construction worker buried under 11 feet of dirt Thursday during an excavation collapse at a Pacific Palisades home has died, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Department spokesman Devin Gales said rescuers were called to the home shortly before 11 a.m. and worked furiously to free the man but could not reach him in time.

By mid-afternoon, the body of the unidentified victim was still stuck in the trench in the 600 block of North Palisades Drive.

Dales said CalOSHA inspectors were on the scene to try to determine what had caused the cave-in and whether any safety violations had occurred.
