Six dead in Greyhound bus crash near Fresno [Updated]

Six people were dead and at least 10 others injured after a Greyhound bus that had left Los Angeles for  Sacramento crashed on northbound state Highway 99 in the Central Valley, the CHP said Thursday.

[Updated at 7:45 a.m.: The bus driver was among the dead, the CHP said.]

The accident occurred when the bus driver swerved in an attempt to avoid an overturned sport utility vehicle. The bus struck the SUV before colliding with another vehicle, then slammed into a concrete center divider and a tree, said Officer Michelle Sigmond of the California Highway Patrol.

Five people were killed inside the bus, which carried 47 passengers, and one died later at a hospital, she said. 

Sigmond said four women and two men died in the crash, which was reported at 2:14 a.m. just outside of downtown Fresno near McKinley Avenue.

She said four other people suffered major injuries and six had minor injuries. Sigmond did not know how many of the injured were in other vehicles.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed at Olive Avenue as the investigation and cleanup continued.
