San Diego mayor rallies Padres fans to vote for relief pitcher

July 7, 2010 |  1:01 pm
Heath Using his office as a bully pulpit, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders is rallying residents to correct what is seen locally as an outrage: the lack of a Padres pitcher on the National League All-Star team.

Sanders on Wednesday urged fans to go to Major League Baseball's website, MLB.com, and vote for reliever Heath Bell for the final spot on the All-Star roster. Voting ends Thursday. The annual game is July 13 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

"Heath has what it takes to get the job done," Sanders said in an official announcement.

Bell leads the majors with 23 saves.
