Funeral services set for CHP Officer Justin McGrory

July 2, 2010 |  8:57 am

Hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the state are expected to attend funeral services Tuesday in Victorville for California Highway Patrol Officer Justin McGrory, who was killed in an accident on Interstate 15 near Barstow.

McGrory, 28, is one of five CHP officers killed while on duty since May 7, authorities said. A vehicle clipped the back of a CHP patrol car, striking and killing McGrory while he stood on the shoulder of the highway for a traffic stop.  The driver, Rafael Garcia, 18, of Las Vegas has been charged in connection with the officer's death on June 27.

A viewing will be held Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sunset Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary at 24000 Waalew Road in Apple Valley. The memorial service is scheduled for noon Tuesday at High Desert Church at 14545 Hook Blvd. in Victorville. Graveside services will be at Sunset Hills Memorial Park & Mortuary.

"They were all accidents that are very hard to prepare for," said Jon Hamm, chief executive of the California Assn. of Highway Patrolmen. "The officers were doing the right thing … it's just a dangerous job."
