Civil rights activists condemn remarks allegedly made by Mel Gibson

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef01157018d72f970b-320wiCivil rights activists are strongly condemning actor and director Mel Gibson’s alleged use of the N-word during a recorded argument with the mother of his child publicized by two tabloid media websites.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Institute, is calling for a boycott of Gibson’s movies while the Southern Christian Leadership Conference California said that Gibson has shown a pattern of racism and sexism in prior remarks.

Rev. Eric P. Lee, president of the California branch of SCLC, said Gibson’s statements are sexist and racist.

Gibson has shown “patterns of racism, sexism and anti-Semitism, because this is not the first time he has been publicly heard making extremely offensive comments about other races, and now about women,” Lee said.

Radar Online reporters say they have heard a tape made by Oksana Grigorieva, Gibson's ex-girlfriend and mother of his baby daughter, Lucia. Gibson and Grigorieva have been battling in court over custody issues.

In an e-mail to The Times, Gibson’s representative Alan Nierob said that he had not yet confirmed the report's accuracy "due to legal matters."

According to Radar, Gibson is heard yelling insults at Grigorieva, including a nasty racial epithet. In one of his rants, Gibson reportedly says, "You look like a ... pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of ..., it will be your fault." The entertainment website TMZ said it has confirmed the remark.

In addition to a string of derogatory remarks, Gibson also is said to have threatened his girlfriend, saying "I am going to come and burn the ... house down."

If the statements made by Gibson are determined to be accurate, Lee said the SCLC will call on the entertainment industry to demonstrate equitable punitive measures against Gibson as it has done against other actors.

In 2006, during a driving under the influence arrest, Gibson, according to authorities unleashed a profanity-laced tirade against a Jewish sheriff’s deputy that included anti-Semitic remarks. The actor later apologized for his actions and asked for forgiveness.

Now we start to monitor a quarrel between to person and try to analyze what is offensive? This is not even a public statement. Quarrel produces all kind of cursing. Blacks can say all kinds of things, have black award, black month, black entertainment, black magazine etc and whites can't have that. No blacks was involved and nobody were targeted specifically.

It's just words GET OVER IT.

how is this newsworthy? I get it, another chance to show his DUI Mugshot...nice

Well of course the usual hustlers are out in profusion condemning this. But has anybody actually HEARD the tape? TMZ "confirms" it. What is that worth? I think if we're going to go out with pitchforks and firebrands and put the poor schlub to the stake, somebody ought to have actually heard the tape and not just cheap tabloid innuendo.

And it seems to me that since we have forgiven Biden and Byrd and others of the left for using the term, after of course apology and atonement, so too should Mr. Gibson, IF HE IS GUILTY, be allowed to apologize and atone.

But could this piling on, this cruxifiction before evidence be an example of the left going after somebody not for his ugly language, if true, but because he is a HERETIC and refuses to bow down to leftist cant?

It will be interesting to see how much hypocrisy attends this tale as it unwinds. I'm suspecting more than usual, given the players already puffing themselves up.

So what - Blacks use the N-word all the time for each other. It is discrimanatory to say whites can't use it too. (I'm sorry, I meant "reverse discrimination", everyone knows that only whites are "truly" prejudiced and discrimnatiory.) If blacks boycotted all black entertainers who used the N-word, even during their performances, not in a heated argument, who would be left on the Black channel to put down the whites every 30 seconds? I guess the privilage for using the N-word is a "blacks only" thing.

godisred - If people who criticize MG are suppresing free speech by making comments, then you're doing the same thing by criticizing them. Now I'm going to exercise my freedom of speech to point out you're deliberately disengenous, a hypocrite, or maybe just a moron.

Zzzzz. This is 2010, people. People of all races are raggin' on each other in jest or anger. Words are words. If you want them to hurt, you let them.

Now a lot of groups and individuals are getting people riled up over Gibson's tirades and their collection plates and coffers are going to swell as a result. Thank must secretly be thanking Mel.

Outrage is big business.

All you 'cast the first stone' authorities. You must consider yourself perfect, because you are casting your own stones. I'm exercising my freedom of speech to point out that someone is behaving like a jackasss. You're exercising your freedom of speech to say I shouldn't be allowed mine or should feel bad about crticiaing a bigot. Sorry it just doesn't wash, you self-righteous hypocrites. I don't behave like that and will always criticize public figures that do. Now rant on.

Suggestion why not just be polictially correct to appease everyone. Mel Gibson is just as guilty as the next person, how many of you of all races have said something bad about one race or the other. Please you all act as if he is the only one who speaks bad about other races. Yes it is true that there are movies and songs from rap artist, hip hop artist, actors and actresses etc... who do say very bad racial slurs about their own culture but it seems that if money talks some groups just stay quiet. In defense of Mel I will not boycott any of his movies, I do not believe in censorship like some of your folks.

Mel is the best. Give him a break already.

AFTER READING SOME OF THESE COMMENTS I AM SO DISCUSTED WITH MOST OF YOU WHO SEEM TO HAVE NO FEELINGS FOR ANYBODY OF ANY RACE, MY WHITE BROTHERS YOU DISCUST ME AND I ASHAMED OF YOU, YOU ALL SOUND SO DAMN IGNORANT AND SIMPLE MINDED AND HATEFUL, I APPOLOGISE TO MY BLACK BROTHERS. AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HATE PC AND POINT FINGERS YOU ARE THE REASON OUR COUNTRY IS IN BAD SHAPE YOU SHOULD HAVE ALL LEARNED BY NOW TREAT PEOPLE AS YOU WANT TO BE TREATED

AS FOR MEL GIBSON HE IS WASHED UP AND SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR BEATING MY JESUS ON FILM FOR MONEY, RANDY GLOVER SHOULD DISOWN THIS FREAK AND SO SHOULD YOU

who cares! He's not going to keep eye on young one's for you or rnng for presdnt. some people just need to get a hobby or just let it go. funny how some thing's that hapn in church arnt keep't as close an eye on as much as what mel said. Stupid people with nothing better to do. lol! And people wonder where these elected ofclas come from.

who cares.

none of it's true; mel gibson rules.

I will ask all the Civil Rights Activists to request people to boycott and stop buying rap musics because of the use of "N" words. But I don't think Civil Rights Activists don't care about the use of "N" word, they only care because it is from a non-black man. I think that is racism from them.

They are race baiters so they could have a reason not to work at a real job.

DAVE MARTIN, interesting take on the N-word. Castigate all who use it or none at all. I dont use it, my kids dont use it, but the music they listen to daily contains it. I have heard all the "logic" placed in arguments why its ok for the black community to use the word but no one else, but personally, I dont buy it. My family immigrated to this beautiful country during many years after the periods of slavery and Jim Crow but at times i think I am still held responsible.

"Pig in heat" that's funny. I gotta steal that.

So, the no longer pertinent "civil rights" activists are exhumed again for another issue. Gibson's an idiot, but where are these activists when children of color are being gunned down? Disgusting hypocrisy, publicity stunting, egomania and laziness.

you go Mel

I don't care about his racial or sexual views...I think he a decent actor and he make good movies...

I think everyone is oversensitive...

At least now when I attend one of his movies...nobody will be shooting into the screen...or talking gibberish, loudly....

People say crazy stuff when they're fighting with their (ex-)significant other. Even more so for Mel Gibson who, obviously, has emotional/psychological/substance abuse issues. The best public response that civil rights groups could offer would be to hope that he gets professional help.

Christians like Mel Gibson are the scourge of this world.

I will never buy, rent, or see another Mel Gibson movie again. I know its everyone's choice, but I've had it with this guy. The it was "a private conversation," or "he was mad or drunk" excuses don't cut it. I would never and have never talked to someone with such disrespect, no matter how angry I am. This has been consistent with Mel, and its getting old.

For me, its not just the "N word" which seems to be what people are focusing on most. What about saying she deserved to get raped? Calling her other horrible names? Threatening to burn down her house? He also supposedly hit her, with dental records to prove the damage done - he's known for saying sexist things, as well as homophobic diatribe and being unapologetic about these things. The only thing he ever apologized for was the antisemitic BS.

This guy is hateful to almost all minorities. Short of the people that are just like him, I don't see how people could defend him as a person. He's a fine actor, for sure, but I will not support someone who would never respect me as a person.

Signed,
Mrs. Black, Gay and Jewish

Ever listen to the lyrics of some rap or hip hop recordings? Gibson's rant (which was his private rant) pales in comparison to the trash coming out of some of the so-called artists. Maybe Caucasians can elevate the word whitey so that it can only be used as the "w" word...otherwise, totally racist. Gringo becomes the "g" word, etc. When the gays adopted queer as their own and not allowing it to be used as a derogatory slant (sticks and stones...), the impact of the word became nil.

If this story is true, the racial comments from Mr. Gibson are absurd and demeaning to women and Blacks in general. Black women and men should be outraged, but all races of men and women should be outraged. He gives "real men" a bad name. But any person acting like this gives humanity a bad name. What type of “man” speaks to the mother of their child like this? It doesn't matter how mad you are. Also, for all of the people who would excuse his behavior based on the excuse that the Black community uses the same language when speaking to other Blacks is flawed logic. None of you know all of the Black community. That is you don’t know: the judges, lawyers, doctors, engineers, electricians, teachers, nurses, policemen, servicemen and women. A great many of you I am certain, make it a point to avoid most Black folks, truth be told. So that brief encounter you have in a store, or the rap music you hear from a black recording artist on the radio is not representative of the whole "Black Community." I don’t know what is more disturbing people behaving so badly, or other people supporting and defending the outrageous behavior. Stop supporting violence, and threats of violence against women. Also there is the possibility that his rage was being fueled by alcohol or drugs. If he was under the influence I strongly suggest that Mr. Gibson stops drinking and stop self-medicating immediately.
