Yorba Linda passes measure supporting Arizona illegal immigration law [Updated]

The Yorba Linda City Council approved a resolution this week supporting Arizona’s illegal-immigration law, making it what is believed to be the first city in California to approve a measure supporting the legislation.

The resolution approved Tuesday on a 3-0 vote also calls on the federal government to secure the national borders, said Mayor John Anderson, who sponsored it.

The council meeting was attended by several dozen people, many of whom spoke on the issue. The Arizona law says police may check the status of people they have stopped for another reason and reasonably suspect are illegal immigrants, according to the Arizona Legislature's website.

[Updated at 2:06 p.m.: A previous version of this post said police were required to check the immigration status of people they stop and suspect are illegal immigrants.]

“It’s a statement to ask the federal government to enforce the laws,” Anderson said Friday. “This isn’t in response to anyone but Arizona and the problem we commonly share.”

In Riverside County, the Hemet City Council last month asked its city manager to draft a similar resolution, to be voted on within the month. On the other side of the issue, the Los Angeles City Council and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have voted to boycott Arizona and ban official travel to the state to protest the law.

Voting with Anderson were Councilwoman Nancy Rikel and Councilman Mark Schwing. Councilwoman Jan Horton left before the issue came up late Tuesday to attend to a personal emergency.

Councilman Jim Winder walked out of the meeting when the issue came up, saying it was a waste of time and had nothing to do with Yorba Linda city government.

Let's not be racist! We'll kick out the illegal Swediish immimgrants (around 900), illegal Irish (approx. 1200), illegals from the continent of Africa (150,000), illegal Indians (around 270,000), the illegal Filipinos (roughly 280,000), THEN illegals from Mexico/Honduras/Guatemala/El Salvador (8,000,000!!!!!!).

Math does not equal racism....nice work Yorba Linda, let's go get those illegal Australians (800+), too!

I would conceed that Yorba Linda's legislation does nothing for the city if we all agree the same for Los Angeles' boycott against AZ. It really is not the business of anyone in California, rather the voters of the state of AZ...and they have spoken. However, LA's boycott has begun a debate in CA whether we want it or not. Retaliation from AZ in response to this boycott may affect other cities as well, thank you LA for dragging us into this. Given the possible consequences, the Yorba Linda City Council was right to choose a side and voice their opinions.

I am hispanic and my wife is an immigrant. We both SUPPORT the Yorba Linda measure and Arizona. We do not feel this is about race at all, it's about illegal immigration. My wife went through the proper channels, she had to study, learn the language and pass the naturazation exams. She followed the law, put in the work and earned her citizenship.

One of the arguements I've heard is that we will be forced to wash our own cars or do our own gardening. Really? Is that the deciding factor here? We should ignore the law because some people are afriad to mow their own lawns? If that's the price we have to pay for obeying the law so be it.

Gotta love it. More evidence of liberal media bias. Thank you, Mr. Quinones, for posting false information as fact. At least they corrected this one.

Yes.
More city should come forward and support arizona law. I'm writing from Los Angeles.
Thank you Yorba Linda.

Los Angeles Resident, Ervica

Congratulations city council of Yorba Linda somebory got brains I wish can move to Yorba Linda.

Yes Yorba Linda
Please more city come forward. Together we can be strong. United we stand.
Good action our city in Los Angeles falling apart. There is no discriminatory action anywhere.

I am supporting Arizona law and your.

Mike, Los Angeles Residents

Be careful what you wish for, cause might just get it !

I guess it's going to take individual cities rising up against the ignorant LA county supervisors to show that most people do not support their boycott. It's a complete shame that illegal aliens are getting the protection deserving of American citizens. I'm ashamed of Los Angeles. I will be spending our vacation money in AZ to show support to them for standing up against illegal aliens and the constitution.

I agree that something has to be done about the immigration problem in California. But we also have to remember that the problem does not only include Mexicans. Yorba Linda is home to many, many Asian and Canadian immigrants. There are white looking Europeans who come with student visas and then decide to stay after their visas have expired. What should we do with all of those people? Let's remember that people of color come in more than just brown.

Hurray for Yorba Linda!! The AZ law is NOT about Mexicans, it is about illegals, which includes Muslims who want to kill all Americans. No one cares about them until a bomb goes off killing many people, then hey, where did they come from? News-they come and go as they please! Same with Russians, Cubans or any other race that wants a better life and would rather claim it by ripping you off than earning it legally!

Quite ironic considering the million dollar McMansions being build by Toll Brothers, MBK or Shapell have tons of construction worksers of which are notorious for hiring illegals.

Even more ironic are the buysers of these homes are majority of Asiandon't believe me swing by Lakeview Avenue visit the model and drive around the area.

Please Vacation in Arizona in support of the Law.

Lets get the momentem going in our towns attend the meetings and ask them to adopt the law.

Congrats. Finally a city with enough sense to support the USA. To bad the uneducated in LA could not figure out what the law really means, instead of needless propaganda.

Anybody who sees this as a racist thing needs to be educated. Lets see how many fools come out of the woodwork.

Way to go Yorba Linda. This is the beginning of more cities to join the AZ effort.

It's about time communities stood up for what is right and fair in this country and to not be bullied by the liberal marxist left, who are behind the postings of those folks who say that fighting illegal immigration is racist and Nazi-like. You guys have no idea what the Nazi's did to the Jews if you think the AZ law backers are Nazis.

If you are for illegal immigration, please take yourself and your families and try to illegally immigrate somewhere else.

We welcome legally credentialed immiration in this country.
We will not stand nor accept any other means to legal immigration other than that.... following the federal laws and statues to legal immigration.

Illegal immigrants need to understand that what they are doing is a federal crime; it's just that the Feds have not enforced their own laws.... yet!

Sanctuary cities should lose all federal funding and sanctuary church's should lose their tax-free status.
btw: what happened to the separation of church and state?

Reason why hispanics are pissed off at the Arizona law is because they have not read it. Did they translate it in spanish yet for the hispanics to read?

Costa Mesa also declared itself as a city of laws and now two illegal alien activists in Sacramento Mendoza and Cedillo refuse to sell the land they originally said the state would sell to the city for the citys fair.

If anything should be boycotted it is Catalina Island. It is an island full of illegals. It went from a nice place to a sanctuary for illegals. Sad.

I'm moving to Y L!!! yay

WOW, Yorba Linda really smart. Of all the issues in the world this one is top. How about the problem with BP killing 11 people in Gulf of Mexico. Let also look at education in California, the student profile at UCI does not reflect that area. Stop, think and don't do something stupid.

Makes me want to do all of my shopping in Yorba Linda...give them my tax dollars...WAY TO GO YORBA LINDA

Why do you still keep hiring undocumented illegal immigrants for work, why not crack down or feel more outraged at the legal US businesses just as production, farms, manufacturers who hire illegal immigrants? Also, why don't we blame our problems on how the government still spends billion, yes BILLIONS!! on war and on buying international weapons each year; that's where our hard earned money is going to! Not the illegal immigrants.
Arizona and many others are trying to find the scape goat to all their economic and social woes, so you try to find someone to blame and hate. Disgusting.

Wow, of all the dumpest thing to do. What about the problem with BP killing 11 people within the last mont. Another problem is education in California look at UCI student profile, does not reflect that area. Stop, think and don't do something stupid.

I don't think in any way that this Arizona Law has ANYTHING to do with someone or some city/state being racist, it has to do with the fact that when you are here in this county ILLEGALLY then you are breaking the law!!!!!!! What is so hard for people to understand that one and only fact!!!! Get your papers processed BEFORE you come into this country!!!! That is the LAW!!!!! It has nothing to do with the color of your skin, the country that your from, the language that you speak!!!!

I wish Moreno valley would do it also!!..I was just in line at Bank of America on Ironwood and Pidgeon pass..nothing but Illegal Families in line with 3-4 kids with them..1 lady had 4 kids and 1 in the belly..her Hubby only spoke spanish and all the teller HAD to speak spanish..It ticked me off that when I came to the teller she had the nerve to speak to ME in spanish!!??!..After that I went to Jack in the BOx and all I seen in there working was Mexican Mamas...Not one was speaking english.

The Illegal immigration debate is not a simple matter of immigration but it is a sign of a deep dislike between the United States and Mexico. The illegal immigration debate is a kind of "Cold War" between Mexico and the United States .In the view of the Mexicans, the Mexican-American War is not over and the struggle continues to assert Mexican power in the United States

Yes.... thank you Yorba Linda, An AMERICAN town.
