Yorba Linda passes measure supporting Arizona illegal immigration law [Updated]

The Yorba Linda City Council approved a resolution this week supporting Arizona’s illegal-immigration law, making it what is believed to be the first city in California to approve a measure supporting the legislation.

The resolution approved Tuesday on a 3-0 vote also calls on the federal government to secure the national borders, said Mayor John Anderson, who sponsored it.

The council meeting was attended by several dozen people, many of whom spoke on the issue. The Arizona law says police may check the status of people they have stopped for another reason and reasonably suspect are illegal immigrants, according to the Arizona Legislature's website.

[Updated at 2:06 p.m.: A previous version of this post said police were required to check the immigration status of people they stop and suspect are illegal immigrants.]

“It’s a statement to ask the federal government to enforce the laws,” Anderson said Friday. “This isn’t in response to anyone but Arizona and the problem we commonly share.”

In Riverside County, the Hemet City Council last month asked its city manager to draft a similar resolution, to be voted on within the month. On the other side of the issue, the Los Angeles City Council and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have voted to boycott Arizona and ban official travel to the state to protest the law.

Voting with Anderson were Councilwoman Nancy Rikel and Councilman Mark Schwing. Councilwoman Jan Horton left before the issue came up late Tuesday to attend to a personal emergency.

Councilman Jim Winder walked out of the meeting when the issue came up, saying it was a waste of time and had nothing to do with Yorba Linda city government.

Thank you Yorba Linda. I wish I could get out of this roach motel called L.A.!

crazy and sad yorba linda shame on you!!!!!!sad

Is good to know there are some politicians with enough guts to say enough is enough.
Kudos to Yorba Linda and Costa Mesa.

Slippery slope is starting to go into action.... awesome!

Why is it that if someone voices their opinion against illegal immigration they are called racist? This has been going on for so long and the federal government does not enforce the law. You have to draw a line sometime. If this is not stopped now it will get worst. With the recession and unemployment we have to look out for ourselves. Majority of Americans support AZ law but for some reason our government is worried what other countries will think. Other countries not care about us, why should we. It's all about the United States, we should worry about what happens here. I am a legal immigrant and a minority and I support AZ law..

All just political nonsense. The measure, along with the AZ law, are simply unconstitutional and will go NOWHERE... Now cue all the racist, hate-filled, xenophobic comments... GO!

Great for Yorba Linda! Supports of Yorba Linda & Arizona are not racist. We just support coming to this country legally. I am standing up for all of those immagrants following the correct way to come to America to enjoy their freedom!

VILLAGROISA loves his money and rich friends. He doesnt love you!

It's about time a non majority hispanic city (Santa Ana, Los Angeles) step up to the plate and support a law that's on the nations books! Everyone else from different countries immigrate legally. Why can't Mexico and all of these other hispanic countries do the same?! More cities and states should have the balls to step up and support Arizona!!! What, is everyone afraid to offend illegal immigrants who don't even have ANY rights in this country? Wake up people Mexico is trying to take back it's land by breeding in the US like rabbits cuz they know the fed law allows anchor babies!!!!!!!!!!!! Get a clue America!!

Go Yorba Linda! Hopefully AZ shuts the lights off in Los Angeles.

I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT THE BIG PROBLEM IS MY MOTHER CAME FROM CANADA AND BECAME A AMERICAN IN THE 1960'S SHE EARNED HER PAPERS AND NOW PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO DO THINGS THE RIGHT WAY. I OWN A BUSINESS AND PAY TAXES WHY SHOULD OTHERS
NOT HAVE TO DO IT THE RIGHT WAY? AND NOT PAY LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. FOR SECURITY REASONS IT SHOULD BE DONE RIGHT

Way to go Yorba Linda your my kind of town. Now StabaAna should do the same thing since 2/3rd's of this place is all mexican.

Nothing racist about illegal.

Time to stand up.

Thank you Yorba Linda for showing common sense and not being afraid of standing up to critics who have no clue, or for that matter a sensible argument against AZ's law. And LA City Council and LA County Supervisors? No wonder LA and LA County is in such bad shape. You are sticking your noses in another state's business instead of taking care of business here. Oh yeah, Mayor Villaragosa, maybe if you read the AZ law and THOUGHT about it, instead of enjoying freebie basketball games, etc., you would not have made such a stupid statement about boycotting AZ. Remember, Arizona is just ENFORCING a FEDERAL law that the federal government hasn't and apparently won't enforce and won't help Arizona keep their citizens safe. What's AZ's other option?

This does not surprise me at all. Yorba Linda is a racists city along with Mayor Anderson. This is the WEST COAST and not the SOUTH. Take your KKK sorry behinds back to the SOUTH where you and all racists bigots belong. One thing for sure, their Yorba Linda high schoolers like smoke all that meth and crack. Look up the article on CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY FULLERTON'S WEBSITE the Daily Titan recently posted.

Common sense in Yorba Linda. I guess they don't want to end up broke like L.A. Yorba Linda must have a real mayor and city council and not a bunch of politically correct, money wasting chair warmers like L.A.

at least somebody in california has some balls and I live in california we need to force are city members to do the same as yorba linda way to gothe only reason latinos are upset is because their race is the majority breaking the law.

a good city just got great...CHEERS

Yorba Linda is a beautiful place to live and many of us already mow our own lawns and wash our own cars!!That is a racist thing to say (oneeyeopen)! We are a city of proud Americans who work our asses off to live here and have great schools parks Churches etc. we pay dearly in taxes to this welfare state .We also have many beloved sons and daughters who have been willing to die for YOU ..so Thanks to Yorba Linda city coucil for standing up and being counted as doing the RIGHT thing!!God Bless America!!

People fall for distractions so easily. The immigration problem is a broken system but has become a part fear politics. The citizens are so concerned about their hard earned money and how immigrants are "stealing" it. Have we forgot how the banks and select corporations manipulated Americans into paying for their failed gambling scheme and our grandchildren will be paying for thier lies in the future? Let's not forget the recent environmental catasrophe in the Gulf Coast that will affect millions of Americans for years to come. I guess if the banks and BP were Mexican owned more people would be up in arms. For all the true patriots that purchase your Chevy and Ford trucks because they are "American", check out the Made in Mexico stickers.

OK - YOU ARE NEXT RIVERSIDE

WELCOME TO ALL "LEGAL" U.S. IMMIGRANTS!

good job

Well in all fairness, those of you who are against the Federal government being given more power should STFU. It is after all for our own good, our own safety and a better America. And if you don't like the Fed having so much power, you are a "Bad American" and need to leave the country. That being said, Police should also be given the right to weed out everyone's dirty laundry when they pull them over. Because we never know who could be a terrorist, thief, rapist, or murderer. And i don't trust ANY of you out there. National Security at any cost. Even if it means giving up our rights. We do in fact live under the Jurisdiction of the US government and they need to protect their interets; even from us. God Bless America.

The damage caused by invasive species, such as the Zebra and Quagga mussels, snakehead, Asian Carp, etc., has beeen devastating on the enviornment, such as the Great Lakes. They got in and now we spend billions in repairs to waterways, pumps and filtration systems, and they have destroyed native habitats.

The consequences of illegal immigration being undeterred for decades is the same.
