Maywood to lay off all city employees, dismantle Police Department

The city of Maywood will lay off all city employees and begin contracting police services with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department effective July 1, officials said.

In addition to contracting with the Sheriff's Department, the Maywood City Council voted unanimously Monday night to lay off an estimated 100 employees and contract with neighboring Bell, which will handle other city services such as finance, records management, parks and recreation, street maintenance and others. Maywood will be billed about $50,833 monthly, which officials said will save $164,375 annually.

"We will become 100% a contracted city," said Angela Spaccia, Maywood's interim city manager.

Deputies from the East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station will begin patrolling the 1.2-square-mile city by the end of the month, said Capt. Bruce Fogarty of the Sheriff's Contract Law Enforcement Bureau. The annual cost of providing those services for the small city is estimated at $3.6 million, Fogarty said.

At a council meeting Monday night, city leaders said they were forced to dismantle the Police Department and lay off city workers because they lost insurance coverage as a result of excessive police claims filed against the department. They also blamed years of financial abuse and corruption from the previous council.

"We're limited on our choices and limited on what we can do," Councilman Felipe Aguirre told the standing- room-only crowd.

Frustrated and enraged residents blame the council for the city's predicament, and for not following an insurance agency's recommendations, which council members had agreed to last August. The recommendations included hiring a permanent city manager.

Some suggested that city leaders should step down.

"You guys had the power to change it and you didn't," said City Treasurer Lizeth Sandoval, 28, who addressed the council as a resident. "You single-handedly destroyed the city."

Sandoval, a city employee, will be laid off as part of the cuts.

Local activists, who refer to themselves as "A Group for a Better Maywood," announced their intention to recall four of the council members: Felipe Aguirre, Edward Varela, Vice Mayor Veronica Guardado and Mayor Ana Rosa Rizo. The same group sought a similar recall in 2008 and failed.

One thing this article doesn't mention is that a huge majority of the people living here are illegals. This is what is going to happen all over California soon because we are a sanctuary state and between the unions and the illegals, we are now bankrupt! Oh, well, what's one more state down the drain to satisfy the politically correct communist left! Its just our country.... no biggie!

Why doesn't Maywood simply unincorporate and become part of the county? At this point, why do they need to retain (and pay) elected officials and a staff of administrators to oversee contractors when the county might offer greater eco0nomies of scale? Law enforcement would be by the sheriff's office instead of the police department, etc.

What? All the illegals are not draining the system? They are SOOOOO productive and pay SOOOOOO many taxes. NOT!

Read their last names carefully.....this is the reason this county along with the rest of California is in trouble. The Mexicans and others have hijacked Cali and now they are in office. Does anyone see the trend with this state. It will be like a third world country before the Hispanics/Latinos finish with it. That is just how they are. Like it or not!!!

Hey to you progressive liberals, this is just the beginning! When will politicians and government understand you can't give away the farm and still have the benefit of the milk and produce! I was raised in those years when, "He who worked got to eat"! There was no government welfare during the 1940's when I was a child! LBJ hadn't started his "Great Society" !

This needs to happen in every city in America, City employees are often paid higher than their counterparts when you figure all the benefits on top of it. As a taxpayer I am tired of over paying people that work for the State, County and City.

Let any of them enter the real work force and see exactly how difficult it is.

Just think, when we get amnesty, all the dear folks of Maywood, Bell, South Gate, Bell Gardens, Pico Rivera, Montobello and yes LA and East LA will get to vote for more and more. Thank you neighbor!

Before you turn the lights out don't forget to sign a petition to boycott Arizona

They can get all the "contractors" they need outside the Home Depot.

GOOD START, fire them all and get rid of the pensions and chase them OUT OF TOWN!

Free Enterprise! ...we have competition over garbage disposal; competing companies have different days for pick up so you're basically free to choose by which day you put your stuff out. Not happy with company A's price or service, put your stuff out on a different day.

We also have independent, non-profits, one providing water/sewer service, the other providing the fire department. Police is currently rent-a-cops with backup from the county sheriff.

Unfortunately, we may convert to a full city-charter form of government simply because the FEDERAL government will not provide FEMA services to POA or other unincorporated cities or towns. Further, rent-a-cops can't arrest people or carry guns.... they have to call the sheriff when things get bad.

So what does this say? Government has a way of protecting itself.... including blocking suits for failure to provide proper services or causing injury, etc.

I sure wish I could sue the President for breaking promises or forcing plans on us that fail to save money as promised or fails to offer the promised levels of service....

If only we could vote day to day for which government we want to obey/pay-taxes-to by deciding which day we will put out our garbage!!!! ...not THAT is a "VOTER RIGHTS" issue I'd like to see demanded!

This is your future if you keep voting Democrat and continue to give the public employee unions free reign. Can't say I have much sympathy.

Semms to me that this tiny little town has not been very successful in hiring any honest or competent people administer its daily functions and departments. I an town that appears to be 96%+ hispanic, somehow this does not surprise me. And, just whos idea was it to make an area of 1.2 square miles a seperate city? That is simply idiotic on all levels.

Libertarians should keep a close eye on Maywood. If you want very limited government, Maywood will be the poster child. My guess is it ain't gonna be pretty. But let's all watch, as time will tell.

With over 11,000 illegal aliens sucking off the city, I can see why they are going broke. You would think the City Council could figure this problem out for themselves.
Solution to the problem: Enact a law similar to the Arizona law. Deport all illegal aliens. End of problems.
This shouldn't be hard to understand.

Another city destroyed by liberal politicians. Next, Little Tony and the useless L.A. city council will lead Los Angeles off a cliff. I guess we'll have to contract with China to take care of us.

Figures. ditto what ms said.

I guess everyone needs to go buy guns and get ready to protect themselves.

What percentage of the population is on welfare? How many are illegal? How did they expect to successfully run a city with no tax base? This is the future of CA and its Democrat/sanctuary city ideals. Did this city council vote to boycott AZ? What fools.

What is so bad about subbing out government services? So you have LA county Sheriffs instead of local cops. What's the beef? Costs go down. Hopefully this includes shutting down the city council. This just goes to show that a city (county, state, attention California) can't function with a 20 percent poverty rate. For those weak in math, that means one out of every FIVE people is receiving some form of government assistance. You can't build an economy based on people selling produce on the side of the road and getting misc. construction jobs at Home Depot.

I have a question! What ethnic background are these individuals lineage of? are they first, second or third generation? This is what happens when you have people who no longer serve for the better of the community but for the thicker wallet instead.

Likely Bell will have to hire some of the Maywood employees to be able to provide these services. If Bell can provide the services for $13,666 less per month so be it. The residents of Maywood will probably not see a big difference. We do have a Maywood in Illinois that is very corrupt as well. So, when I read the article I first thought it was Maywood, IL. But, unfortunately, it was s different Maywood.

The dismantling of all social services and city employees? Isn't that the libertarian dream? The city council members should be the heroes of the Tea Party.

The people who took the vote did NOT include themselves in the cutback. Is this typical of politicians or what?

I think it's funny, in an insane sort of way, that the citizens of a place (city, country, village -- you can take your choice) ever have a favored politician whom they support. News flash! They're all scum. Every single one of them ... worthless!!!

Beat them down at every opportunity. Get on it.

Think twice next time before labeling yourself a "sanctuary city."
