Maywood to lay off all city employees, dismantle Police Department

The city of Maywood will lay off all city employees and begin contracting police services with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department effective July 1, officials said.

In addition to contracting with the Sheriff's Department, the Maywood City Council voted unanimously Monday night to lay off an estimated 100 employees and contract with neighboring Bell, which will handle other city services such as finance, records management, parks and recreation, street maintenance and others. Maywood will be billed about $50,833 monthly, which officials said will save $164,375 annually.

"We will become 100% a contracted city," said Angela Spaccia, Maywood's interim city manager.

Deputies from the East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station will begin patrolling the 1.2-square-mile city by the end of the month, said Capt. Bruce Fogarty of the Sheriff's Contract Law Enforcement Bureau. The annual cost of providing those services for the small city is estimated at $3.6 million, Fogarty said.

At a council meeting Monday night, city leaders said they were forced to dismantle the Police Department and lay off city workers because they lost insurance coverage as a result of excessive police claims filed against the department. They also blamed years of financial abuse and corruption from the previous council.

"We're limited on our choices and limited on what we can do," Councilman Felipe Aguirre told the standing- room-only crowd.

Frustrated and enraged residents blame the council for the city's predicament, and for not following an insurance agency's recommendations, which council members had agreed to last August. The recommendations included hiring a permanent city manager.

Some suggested that city leaders should step down.

"You guys had the power to change it and you didn't," said City Treasurer Lizeth Sandoval, 28, who addressed the council as a resident. "You single-handedly destroyed the city."

Sandoval, a city employee, will be laid off as part of the cuts.

Local activists, who refer to themselves as "A Group for a Better Maywood," announced their intention to recall four of the council members: Felipe Aguirre, Edward Varela, Vice Mayor Veronica Guardado and Mayor Ana Rosa Rizo. The same group sought a similar recall in 2008 and failed.

Holy Habanero, it must be Arizona's fault.

If you can't manage a budget then you can't hope to lead. The entire leadership of the city should be purged and a new charter should be organized.

The city should just be dissolved if it's not going to provide city services to its residents. Otherwise, what's the purpose of being incorporated and having a City Council? They should return their charter and disband.

If you come from a corrupt 3rd world country. Most likely you don't know anything about.... nor have any respect for government. And you wonder why CA is falling into the ocean. SIDE NOTE . I see Obamee's going after the WoRLD TAX PLAN again this time it's not global warming, it's the OIL SPILL causing climate change, OKAY, so now we know for a fact it was delibratley blown up... remember , "never let a good crisis go to waste". Hell let's just create a good crisis and TAX TAX TAX TAX TAX TAX. More money more travel more luxury more booze more babes....YA BABY we are all goin' to Disneyland 1st class.

Maywood has one of the highest, if not the highest, ILLEGAL alien populations in CA. If ILLEGAL aliens contribute so much to society, why is this city broke?

This is what is coming for the rest of the state.

California is committing suicide by continuing to let these people in, and giving them services to boot.

They can't raise taxes in Maywood because the ILLEGAL alien population doesn't pay them.

So let's not focus on these facts:Maywood is 97 percent Latino, high as 45percent of the population are ILLEGALS and use services without paying their fair share . various news accounts have said its official population swells to 45,000 when undocumented immigrants are counted.About one third of its residents work in the factories at nearby Vernon and Commerce. The city has been at the forefront of undocumented immigration debates. The city, 97% of which is Latino, became a sanctuary city where illegals get full city services and city-wide government assistances, this causing a backlash from groups like the Minutemen Project. WOW nope or in Maywood say nada haz nooten tu do withs this amigo. Welcome to Maywood the new, new Mexico.

Wow, Hispanic style corruption and waste occurs in Hispanic cities, no matter what country they are in. Must be a cultural thing.

I mourn for that former beautiful small town.
I lived there in the 1950's and what a wonderful
place to grow up it was. A diverse working
class culture, wonderful transportation system, great schools and teachers and believe it or not
we didn't even have to lock our doors at night
and could sleep with open windows. Goodbye,
Maywood. Actually, Goodbye Los Angeles period!

Egg-ZACT-ly! Trash it all and start from scratch. Determine what a community needs and then what it can afford. Might wanna take a peek at the Constitution for an object lesson while you're at it. (No mention of taxpayer subsidized digital cable converter boxes for the masses there.)

THAT is how government -- where we absolutely, positively HAVE to have its meddlesome nose present -- should work.

And a PS: The Mexification of the Welfare, er, Golden State continues...

This is a terrific model. Literally all government "workers" need to be laid off and whatever little work they did perform should be contracted out under the competitive bidding process. This should be done in everything from records administrators to dog catchers to police and fire.

Let no policeman answer to a corrupt politician in order to keep cushy pay and benefits packages. Lets all compete for our pay - no free rides for anyone.

This means no government employee unions unless we have taxpayer unions who can equally go on strike by not paying taxes to support these overfed, overpaid, bloated government bureaucracies.

Government unions represent the ultimate subversion of democratic self rule. The entire process is corrupt. Unions in the competitive sector must temper their demands for better wages by the fact that excessive demands are self destructive since the consumer has the right to pass on buying their overpriced or shoddy products or services.

This does not exist in the government where they may seize your property and toss you in jail for refusal to purchase their lousy overpriced unasked for "services."

This has been going on for years in Texas. Cities that are good at providing services contract them out to neighboring cities for efficiency and savings. This is common sense government. Why the uproar?

Did you notice that the city leaders mostly have hispanic names? The corrupt socialists from Mexico are taking over the people's repubic of Kalifornia. Why can't the rest of America look at Kalifornia and realise that is what unfettered libtardism and socialist lies will do to society?

Could disenfranchisement be far behind? From what is being said it sounds lke there are a number of investigations that need to be done and possible prosecutions.

The Mexicanization of the former Land of the Free, Home of the Brave continues.

Local activists, who refer to themselves as "A Group for a Better Maywood," announced their intention to recall four of the council members: Felipe Aguirre, Edward Varela, Vice Mayor Veronica Guardado and Mayor Ana Rosa Rizo.

Are we seeing a pattern here? and of what is to come. Pay attention to all the last surnames on the above for this American city. Starting to get the picture on why Mexico is and has been in such dire strates for decades and what is coming and in some cases has arrived already in America.

Call it Racist, Call it descrimination, call it profiling or call it the truth, it is what it is!

That's OK, Mexico and Obama will pay for this city's expenses in addition to the protesting traveling to and from Arizona. Maybe it's time to calculate what free services the illegals are using after you pay for the food, medical care, education and the sidewalks they loiter on. Just a taste of reality and all of California will experience this soon enough!

LaRaza will help you in your time of financial dispair, just pray to the south!

I hope they're ready for the influx of people who will move there. If that's true I'll be there in a heart beat. No unions, no bureaucrates, only business outsourced to run the services. How refreshing and realistic. However not the first time there’s a town in Georgia that has been doing that for over ten years. By the way its one of the cleanest, crime free and richest towns in American. It goes to show us the damage the freeloader does. LA take a lesson.

Isn't Maywood a sanctuary city??
Isn't Maywood the city that wouldn't let their police force arrest illegals for anything??

And if they could print our money like Barack Hussein Obama, they would still be open for business.

When you vote progressive, you get nothing in return.

HELP!!!!!!!! I live in Central Calif.. We are in BIG trouble if we don't get the boarders secure. Between the dummies in LA, Sacramento and DC, our once beautiful state COULD very well turn into anarchy. The ILLEGALS that are swarming our nation will DEMAND Government services, Soc. Security, Medicare... and the Titanic will SINK!!!!!!!! These Illegals should NEVER be allowed amnisty... They will make our nation like Mexico and Venezulia with thier votes.. They have no stake in this nation, Thier fathers and forefathers did not die for thier freedom in this country...Pray for our nation, Pray for new leadership, Pray for our Children and Grandchildren!! God Bless America!!

I wonder if the city council from Southgate just moved next door?

Who would have thought that becoming a sanctuary city would have a negative economic impact?
