Maywood to lay off all city employees, dismantle Police Department

The city of Maywood will lay off all city employees and begin contracting police services with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department effective July 1, officials said.

In addition to contracting with the Sheriff's Department, the Maywood City Council voted unanimously Monday night to lay off an estimated 100 employees and contract with neighboring Bell, which will handle other city services such as finance, records management, parks and recreation, street maintenance and others. Maywood will be billed about $50,833 monthly, which officials said will save $164,375 annually.

"We will become 100% a contracted city," said Angela Spaccia, Maywood's interim city manager.

Deputies from the East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station will begin patrolling the 1.2-square-mile city by the end of the month, said Capt. Bruce Fogarty of the Sheriff's Contract Law Enforcement Bureau. The annual cost of providing those services for the small city is estimated at $3.6 million, Fogarty said.

At a council meeting Monday night, city leaders said they were forced to dismantle the Police Department and lay off city workers because they lost insurance coverage as a result of excessive police claims filed against the department. They also blamed years of financial abuse and corruption from the previous council.

"We're limited on our choices and limited on what we can do," Councilman Felipe Aguirre told the standing- room-only crowd.

Frustrated and enraged residents blame the council for the city's predicament, and for not following an insurance agency's recommendations, which council members had agreed to last August. The recommendations included hiring a permanent city manager.

Some suggested that city leaders should step down.

"You guys had the power to change it and you didn't," said City Treasurer Lizeth Sandoval, 28, who addressed the council as a resident. "You single-handedly destroyed the city."

Sandoval, a city employee, will be laid off as part of the cuts.

Local activists, who refer to themselves as "A Group for a Better Maywood," announced their intention to recall four of the council members: Felipe Aguirre, Edward Varela, Vice Mayor Veronica Guardado and Mayor Ana Rosa Rizo. The same group sought a similar recall in 2008 and failed.

It's good to see the artifical fairy tale land of CA finally showing cracks.
This will demonstrate to the dummies that you cannot support a large percentage of foreigners at the expense of local tax payers.
The best part will be when social services & government school teachers for the hordes of Mexican born parasites.
Only a fool would believe that this system was sustainable.

Destroyed the city? I don't think so Ms. Sandoval. Perhaps your personal gravy train has run out, but less government
means people will be one step closer to freedom.

Government relies upon the forced extraction of "revenue"
to provide it's "services". So does the mafia...think about it. The meaning of the word Extortion doesn't change if the perpretrator's identity changes, it's good some people are finally waking up to that fact.

I will believe this works when I see it. Maywood is known as one of the more corrupt local governments in the LA area.

So sad......this state used to be the finest place to live in this country. Now it serves as a warning to all the others.

Maywood.....Tijuana North. Coming soon to a neighborhood near you.

This sounds like a good deal for Maywood taxpayers. By contracting out the work they can get similar services for 25% of what they've been paying. Government at all levels has grown far too corpulent and needs to lose weight.

Good. Its a start. Cancel all the pensions too.

How can a city populated by what appears to be mostly Hispanics, managed and operated by Hispanics, be named Maywood?

Sort of gives us a vision on how things will be across America as whites decline and Hispanics grow in numbers.

Self governance in California doesn't seem to be working too well these days.
Bummer, dude.

while it will be difficult its time to send a message to CA politicians that its time to fix this fiscal mess California is in thanks to Jerry Brown's corruption in the late 70s and 80s. Hang in there Maywood... Help is coming as long as Jerry Brown stays out of the way!

Does any one know the difference between a latino, a hispanic,a chicano ,or a mexican american ? It seems as though 1 race of people has like 4 or more titles. just sayin.........

Isn't Maywood basically an illegal alien city? Pretty sure it's got one of the highest concentrations of illegals in California, if not the US.

Ironic that people are getting their chonis up in a bunch over fraud and illegal activity.

There will no doubt be more stories like this in the future.

What goes around comes around.

I hear the LA Times are doing great, maybe they will hire them, say a job as a moderater, so they can control free speach. But on second thought, they are probably doing much better where they are. he he he......

Ha, what a con job.

You paid all those taxes, they mismanaged the mess, and now you get contractors. Yes, the quality of service with be just lovely. That's what the sheeple get, nothing. Ask this city for their CAFR then you'll see they are loaded with money, and that not only should you not have to pay more taxes, but you should be getting a regular payment on your investments from them.

At least the American sheeple are waking up to their scams.

For example, the government's Income tax scam (courtesy of bankers).

It’s not any harder than “excluded income”, “eliminated income”, “eliminated items”, or any harder than simple instructions, such as “how to determine taxable income”.

It's amazing that people are so stupid and trusting of their loving governments, local, city, state, and fed.

In fact, Henry Kissinger said it best. "Military men are dumb stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy". But, I think it applies to the majority of humanity. Stupid suckers.

Wow, this comment strikes me...

"Wow, a 28 year old city treasurer.... And there are thousands of real comptrollers/finance majors out there, with no jobs."

So apparently, 28 is too young to be a city treasurer? I know quite a few Attorneys under that age that are capable and brilliant. This comment makes me sick. And to top it all off, an ethnicity comment? What makes a "real comptroller"? Age? How about experience and ability. The ignorance of this post is shocking. Apparently ageism goes both ways.

This is probably just the tip of the Iceberg for Kalifornia.

If I did not have quite a bit a family that lived in CA, it would be nice to just see that state slide right off into the Pacific.

A failed city, in a failed State... I did notice their names.

Wow. What a joke. Sounds like they got what was coming to them.

But what about those poor police and firemen - don't those high-school dropouts deserve their $100K salaries and multimillion dollar retirement plans at age 40? Oh, well... I guess they can get jobs patrolling parking lots at Wal-Mart as $5/hour rent-a-cops. Cops don't prevent rapes, murders, muggings. They simply take reports after-the-fact. In a jam, I'd rather have a pistol than trying to call 911 on an iPhone. Moves like this city is making will soon awake other munis to just how useless and costly their privileged class of public servants really are. Good riddance!

Wait a minute!! We have been informed by reputable sources, including some within the current Obama administration, that workers without verification of legal status/ undocumented immigrants/ citizens of the world that" need no stinkin' papers" (i.e. illegal aliens) have been paying "their fair share" of taxes!! How in the name of Alinsky has thisMaywood travesty occurred? Say it ain't so Joe!

Hey Tony V (L.A. mayor)- this is a vision of your future- be prepared.

Vote Democrat, and the people suffer.

Maywood is a sanctuary city.

Here's the problem.. AGE is NOT mandatory for having COMMON SENSE.. some people go through life without having any.. Now what is happening in CA is what will be happening all over.. PREPARE..this is NOT an accident this is by design..PROGRESSIVE DESIGN.. since the Police are not bound by LAW to risk their lives for yours start a volunteer policing dept as well as fire department.. years ago that is what towns and small cities had..

If you want open borders and more South of the border immigrants, get used to it. We are becoming a lawless, undereducated and unskilled country just like the one they are trying to escape from. And it's spreading around the country.

Better yet...just condo the whole thing.
