A couple in Anaheim allegedly left their 5-year-old son sound asleep in a car while they got high on methamphetamine, authorities said Tuesday.

Jose Santana and his wife, Cynthia Franco, both 25, were arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and being under the influence of a controlled substance, according to authorities.

Orange County sheriff’s deputies received a call shortly after 2 a.m. Monday about a possible vehicle burglary.

“We were checking the cars to see which had been broken into, and lo and behold, we found the 5-year-old asleep in the car,” said Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino. “That takes precedence over anything else. … Apparently they left the kid asleep while they got high on methamphetamine.”

The car was parked in the 9100 block of Regal Avenue.

Deputies found the boy's mother and father nearby in different houses.

“I think they were just using drugs in two separate houses,” Amormino said. “Once they found the parents, they found them under the influence. To me, that’s unfathomable.”
