Former LAPD detective pleads guilty to taking witness relocation money

A former Los Angeles Police Department detective pleaded guilty Tuesday to embezzling more than $30,000 in witness relocation funds.

Leonard Avalos, 44, who was assigned to the Southwest Division, was sentenced to 90 days in jail after entering his plea, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. Avalos resigned from the department after he was charged in May.

Avalos was expected to surrender to authorities June 29 and begin serving his jail sentence, the district attorney's office said. He was ordered to repay $30,445 in restitution.

Prosecutors said the money was taken between Feb. 15 and June 20, 2008. The funds were to be used to relocate three victims, but only one was moved, according to prosecutors.

And they wonder why we don't trust them.

Another one of LAPD's Gods only gets 90 days, and has to pay the money back.

Good to know it cost 10 grand per person for relocation.
