Lakers celebration turns ugly as police, motorists come under attack

The Los Angeles Lakers victory in the NBA championships ended on a sour note as Los Angeles Police Department officers clashed with rowdy fans.

The LAPD brought large numbers of officers into the Staples Center area hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's looting and violence. But fans went on a rampage in some parts of downtown L.A., throwing rocks, shattering windows, rocking cars and setting fire to at least one vehicle and several other objects.

At Figueroa Street and Venice Boulevard, police fired less-than-lethal rounds at fans after they overturned a city parking enforcement vehicle and set fire to orange fire cones. On the LAPD's tactical frequency, officers at the intersection were heard requesting permission to fire  projectiles at a group of men throwing chunks of concrete at them. The permission was granted.

Among other incidents:

--The YMCA at 11th and Olive was attacked by crowds who smashed windows and tagged walls with graffiti.

--Crowds rocked and jumped on cars around Figueroa Street and nearby roads.

--A KCAL-TV Channel 9 news van was attacked by a crowd, which smashed its windows.

--Groups were seen in several downtown locations knocking down news racks, throwing bottles at officers, setting off firecrackers and defacing signs.

The LAPD was making numerous arrests, but the exact number was not immediately available.

Police were able to clear the areas around Staples Center and the L.A. Live shopping complex. But the crowds moved into surrounding neighborhoods, causing problems. Some fans ran onto the freeway.

Police Chief Charlie Beck expressed general satisfaction with the way the massive police force was handling the challenge of dispersing 20,000 people and tamping down several violent groups.

"Obviously, some people didn't heed our admonishments to celebrate safely, but unlike last year this has never gotten out of control. This has been a controlled exercise in crowd control. Unfortunately, we've had to manage some people more than we would have wanted."

--Robert Faturechi, Kate Linthicum, Andrew Blankstein, Ruben Vives, Abby Sewell, Sam Allen, and Hector Becerra.

it was a great, hard fought 7 game series, can't ask for anything more..

Once again the ignorance of Los Angeles and our Rassa Mayor is exposed to the world. We won so lets destroy the city we live in yeah!

Once again the ignorance of Los Angeles and our Rassa Mayor is exposed to the world. We won so lets destroy the city we live in yeah!

LA needs sheriff Joe instead of Beck. Beck's patting himself on the back - while the thugs run the city!

I left the LA area a long time ago and I don't look back!

Par for the course... the NBA has become a joke. Once the 4th quarter started, you knew the officials would look to even-up the game. Sure enough, by the end, LA had shot, what, 37 FT's to Boston's 17? What a joke (and I didn't have a horse in this race -- can't stand the NBA in any way, and have never rooted for either of these teams). Every year it's the same -- like pro-wrestling, the masses shell out the big bucks to huddle together and be duped into thinking their team "came back against all odds." Then, to celebrate, these same mouth-breathers run about setting things on fire and wrecking property. It would have happened anyway, though... such is the world of the NBA.

What a lovely world we live in!

The morons of LA have no self-respect, thats why people are leaving it.

This behavior will not stop until the police are allowed to shoot these lowlifes dead, without fear of reprisal!

Only in such a miserable town as Los Angeles do you find legions of people who "celebrate" yet another NBA victory by destroying the whole damn town.
Thanks for showing the rest of the country to give your city a miss next time we go on vacation.

LA: gotta love the them huh? Jeez. the lunatic state of the union by far.

Retarded Laker fans, they've won how many Championships this decade? They need to start acting like they've been there before and not like this is the first one in forever.

LAPD should fit the Lakers with the bill for their payroll from last night as well for all the damages caused by them.

Take a hard look at who was rioting.
The truth is there for all to see.

This is one reason I no longer follow basketball. Nothing but a bunch of thugs. Thugs follow thugs, thus riots happen. How do you feel now Laker fan?

Is anything else to be expected from a place like LA? This is an illegal immigrants haven, home to criminals who are tolerated like they are Hollywood celebs and the most Liberal Leftists outside of Mordor on the Potomac.

I would NOT call burning cars and/or damaging of buildings by crowds as being a "controlled" crowd!
Although, it IS less dmaage than last year.

I am and always will be a Laker fan. However I am not a fan of Los Angeles the city, for various reasons. Congatulations to the Laker's.

I bet all them are Obama voters.

La Raza SUCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yo, it's like, the thing about LAPD. Despite all the haters, you know.

LAPD rips it up!

Obama voters gone wild....

Let the NBA foot the bill for all this and I bet things would calm down a bit

And California counts itself as civilized? What would they have done if they had lost?

If you look on tv at who is doing the rioting, it wasn't the people who were at the game, it was people waving mexican flags, wearing their 19 dollar knock-off walmart Kobe jerseys, idiots pushing strollers, gang-banging bald headed thugs.... the same idiots who would be out there if they had lost, and the same fools who rob and steal anyway. I hate to say it, but there were no white people rocking cars, fighting, setting fires... what a shame YOU people are to a city like LA

OMG what retards must live in LA...It's always fun to watch the idiots celebrate...when they win the next time maybe it would be fun to loot the stores in the neighborhood. Never let a crisis go to waste

USA now a third world country. Our standards are so low that riots after a game are commonplace. Perhaps a real response by the feckless politicians and cops would put an end to this nonsense, but we are too far gone for that. The future is not bright for us domestically and once Iran gets a nuke we will all be hostages. Time to move,

Cali can burn!!!!!
