Homicide Report: 14 killings last week in L.A. County, at least three stabbings
Coroner's officials reported 14 killings between May 31 and early Monday, bringing the year-to-date total to 302, according to data collected for The Times' Homicide Report database. Countywide homicide rates still remain lower than in previous years: There were 336 killings during the same period last year and 408 in 2007.
Authorities have said that at least three homicides were stabbings, including the June 2 death of Herbert Wong, 30, a porn performer who was attacked late the previous night by a fellow performer at a video distribution business in Van Nuys.
Four days after Wong's death, his alleged attacker, Stephen Hill, 34, apparently threw himself over a cliff following an eight-hour standoff with police, a fatal plunge that was captured by news cameras covering the incident.
LAPD Rampart Area patrol officers responded to a call of a man harassing a woman about 8:30 p.m., according to an LAPD news release.
When police arrived at the location, they found Alvarado lying in the road bleeding, authorities said.
Paramedics were called, and Alvarado was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where she died at 9:15 p.m., according to coroner's records.
Through several tips and leads, officers detained Simon Vega, a 26-year-old Latino, on June 4 in connection with Alvarado's killing.
Topanga Area patrol officers responded to a 911 call described as "unknown trouble" at the residence about 2 a.m., according to an LAPD news release.
When officers arrived, they discovered Silva lying unconscious in the driveway with multiple stab wounds to his body, police said.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were called, and they pronounced Silva dead at the scene, according to coroner's records. There have been no arrests made in connection with his death.
