Rep. Rohrabacher flies to Catalina Island, slams Mexican consulate for aiding illegal immigrants

L3g58lnc
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) flew by helicopter to Santa Catalina Island on Thursday to personally condemn an effort by the Mexican consulate to offer identification cards to undocumented workers there.

Rohrabacher began his visit with a private, 90-minute breakfast meeting attended by Santa Catalina Island Co. officials, Los Angeles County sheriff’s authorities and Avalon Mayor Bob Kennedy to discuss the matter. By some estimates, as much as 70% of Avalon’s permanent population of 3,000 residents are Spanish-speaking Latinos.

“It was a good meeting. We had a very frank discussion about a national issue,” Rohrabacher said afterward. “This community is a microcosm of the problems in the whole country.”

“America can close its eyes and incrementally allow the country to be dominated by people who are here illegally,” added Rohrabacher, who is running for reelection in November and whose district includes the island. “Where you have illegal immigration, crime and drugs are sure to follow.”

Kennedy, standing nearby, would not go that far.

“We have been labeled a sanctuary city and that is not true,” he said. “But this is not a situation that can be handled by local officials. The problem is national.”

The Mexican consul’s office first offered the photo identification cards to local illegal immigrant workers   two years ago, setting up shop for a day in the upscale Catalina Island Country Club restaurant. The matricula cards can be used to establish credit, open bank accounts, buy insurance and apply for government services.

The consul’s office was originally scheduled to offer the service again Thursday at the country club.

But all that changed when Rohrabacher on Wednesday informed the restaurant’s owner, the Santa Catalina Island Co., that State Department approval was necessary in order for any service to be provided by a foreign government on its property.

As a result, the company informed the consul’s office that it could no longer operate out of the country club.

The consul’s team of 12 specialists moved a few blocks away to St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in Avalon.

But their problems were far from over.

At 10 a.m., Rohrabacher and an assistant strode into the church to personally express his concerns, raising eyebrows. Rohrabacher was greeted by Deputy Consul General Juan Carlos Mendoza Sanchez of Los Angeles in the middle of a room where Mexican specialists were typing information into laptop computers from two dozen men and women seeking their services.

But all eyes were on Rohrabacher and Sanchez, who launched into a carefully worded dialogue, expressing strongly opposing opinions.

Standing inches apart, Sanchez told Rohrabacher, “We have a lot of respect for you. At the same time, we have certain responsibilities.”

Rohrabcher responded: “I understand that. But there is a problem in our country; there are too many illegals here.”

“This is not done with any type of belligerency,” Rohrabacher added, referring to his unannounced visit.

“Everyone has their own point of view,” Sanchez said. “We are performing this activity under international law.”

“Well, that will be decided in Washington and Mexico City,” Rohrabacher said.

It is our Governments fault for not having a Customs and Immigration office on the island. The good thing about the Mexican Consulates activity is that their citizens will have documentation - saving work of perhaps hundreds of Federal employees in their processing. Senator Rohrabacher where have you been up until now? Who has agreed to grease your pocket for "suddenly" being on top of this? Regardless, I go to Catalina often and I find the inhabitants both hospitable and hard working. So, after people like Rohrabacher chase all of these hard working people illegal or not from Catalina who are we going to get to do the menial jobs on the island? It will turn into a waste land of drunkards - with no one to clean up after them. Paradise Lost will be the mantra for all after that time.

I wish we had a Rohrabacher running in my district; I'd vote for him in a flash, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

GOOD GOD!!! Handing out cards that allow illegals to apply for government services??? Everyone involved should be deported, consulate kicked off the island and US residents put in jail.

Unbelievable.

Hey Zuma, Why don't you admmit it, you know you like tacos and enchiladas, also Taco Bell is not genuine mexican, yet they are making millions and they are helping this great coutry be what it is, also did you know that it is innabitable, that by 2050 you will become a minority,so follow my advice, if you can't lickem them joinem.

@sailbyme, who owns the businesses that hired the illegals in Avalon?

Three cheers for Rep. Rohrabacher! It is high time American officials got in the Mexican government's face and told them to back off. Enough with the coddling of these meddling, corrupt hypocrites. They should clean up their own failed nation and stop exporting their problems northward.

I remember when I lived in Catalina and life was heavenly. Nothing but white people everywhere I went. Not a minority in sight. Now there is nothing but latinos cutting lawns, cooking in restaurants and cleaning after me and my friends. I can't wait till we can go back to the days when white people are doing that type of work.

Does anyone knows how easily these Mexican I.d.s become fraudulent? L.A. Times needs to follow up on this story showing how easily these Mexican Consuls are handing out fraudulent I.D.s. Of course the Mexican goverment does not care about these I.D.s being legal since the Ids helps illegal immigrates in the United States to sent back to Mexico. Our Federal govt needs to limit the places were these I.D.s are given out such as the Mexican Embassy

Right on, Congressman! In an era where our public officials are doing nothing and just going with the flow until retirement, there are still a few who are willing to do their best to preserve our country. Whether election day antics or grandstanding, who cares! At least somebody is doing something. Sad to hear what's going with Catalina. I had fond memories of my visits there.

Tear down the borders and let everyone come to America. It is one world and we have no right to keep people out of God's land. American law is crap anyway and I deserve free stuff cause American's invaded my land. Vote Democrat to get your free stuff!!!

Thank you Dana!! Someone, finally has the nerve to stand up for OUR country, not the illegals, but *OUR'S*

You are my new hero!

Maybe our country has a chance to survive and thrive again, instead of being stuck in the mire of illegal immigrants, which it has been for too many years

Let's not forget in all of this ranting that most of the southwestern U.S. was taken from Mexico under duress, after an unjust invasion by President Polk, a war that an Illinois congressman named Abraham Lincoln was against. The balance was acquired, also under duress, in the Gadsden Purchase. Perhaps illegal immigration is a case of as ye sow, so ye shall reap, a biblical toss-off for the GOP types. What kind of name is Rohrabacher, anyway, check his papers...

Perfect!! Please don't ever come back to our island again (sailbyme and Judy). I am a caucasian resident on Catalina, and I find your comments repulsive. If you don't want to come back to Catalina because there is a large latino population than PLEASE DON'T! This is California and thats just the way the cookie crumbles...there's lots of Mexicans. If you don't like it, move to the f***ing midwest where idiots like you roam free.

@ Zuma Hans: A foreign government is openly aiding those defying our laws and Rep. Rorabacher is in the wrong? What alternate reality do you exist in? I applaud him for calling them on their outrageous acts. Next time put down the crack pipe and come back to reality before you post a comment.

You go Dana! What arrogance by the consul officials.

The invading horde is spreading like a billion starving locusts. Hmmmm, cards "to apply for government services". LA and all of southern Cal are doomed. Boycott LA, Buycott AZ. Si Se Puede!!!(no that we have our cards).

This kind of grandstanding is so transparent that I'm disappointed that the Times even bothers to cover it. Of course, if Rohrabacher SWAM out to Catalina for the presser... different story.

If you don't support illegal aliens then boycott Catalina Island. I too couldn't believe my eyes when I went there last year. I thought it was Mexico.

How many of that 70 % mentioned in the article are illegals?

Rohrabacker is a hero. The Mexican government, starting with their despicable 'president', have NO respect for U. S. laws.

Liberals are on the wrong side of this issue, but what else is new? They will pay dearly in November.

The problem isn't the government of Mexico, it's those in the governments in these United States. Mexico will act in its interest which is in mass illegal immigration. Now if we only had a government that acted in the interest of the majority of our citizens on this issue.

To allow these identification cards along with the Mexican CID card that's already available to all illegal aliens is a sin and must be stopped soon. This is sinful. Check out all that's already available to Mexican citizens to use in the US legally, sinful.
