CHP officer killed during high-speed pursuit

June 11, 2010 |  7:51 am
A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer died during a high-speed pursuit Friday morning in Redlands.

The accident occurred while the officer was pursuing a suspect in a chase that reportedly reached speeds of 100 mph.

A CHP dispatcher said the officer crashed his motorcycle near San Bernardino and Alabama avenues and was pronounced dead.

It's unclear whether anyone else was injured or whether the suspect is in custody.

The accident comes two days after another California Highway Patrol officer was critically injured during a traffic stop on the 405 Freeway on the Westside.

Authorities are investigating whether the accident was caused by a motorist who was driving along the right shoulder where the officer was conducting a traffic stop, pinning the officer against a Honda SUV that had been pulled over. Investigators are still trying to determine why the motorist, driving an Infiniti, was using the shoulder.
