Villaraigosa heads back to Washington for Calderon visit

May 18, 2010 | 10:33 pm

Less than a week after arriving home from a trip to Washington, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is headed back to the nation’s capital for a two-day visit.

He will attend a number of ceremonies for Mexican President Felipe Calderon, including a White House state dinner on Wednesday night hosted by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Villaraigosa will also attend a luncheon for Calderon on Wednesday, then a joint session of Congress on Thursday, where Calderon will speak, followed by a reception and another luncheon for the Mexican president.

During the visit, Villaraigosa will squeeze in a “meeting with members of Congress” to discuss ways to secure federal support for accelerating transit projects in Los Angeles County being funded by the voter-approved Measure R. Villaraigosa was in Washington last week to lobby for the same program.
