LAPD kills man in North Hills

A man who was seriously injured Thursday afternoon in a shooting by Los Angeles police in North Hills has died of his wounds, authorities said.

Oscar Morales, 21, was allegedly armed with a 24-inch fireplace poker when he encountered police, LAPD Officer Karen Rayner said.

Since January 2007, at least 121 officer-involved homicides have been reported in Los Angeles County, according to a database compiled by The Times' Homicide Report.

Thursday's shooting occurred about 12:30 p.m. in the 8300 block of Burnet Avenue, near the 405 Freeway, authorities said. The slaying was under investigation, the LAPD said.
