A 15-year-old boy collapsed and died while playing basketball with his brother at Crescenta Valley High School in La Crescenta.

Tyler Sikora, an eighth-grader at Rosemont Middle School in La Crescenta, died Thursday night. A candlelight vigil is scheduled at 7:30 tonight at Crescenta Valley High, where his brother, Devin, 18, is a senior.

The boys were playing basketball with friends at the high school when Tyler walked over to get some water and collapsed, said Crescenta Valley High Principal Linda Evans.

"They called 911 [and] asked for help from the adults that were on the track," she said of the students there. "They did all the right things immediately. They immediately recognized something was wrong.”

Tyler had a genetic heart condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Evans told the Glendale News-Press.  The condition is a leading cause of death among young athletes, according to a 1996 study by the American Heart Assn.
