L.A. City Council votes to ban travel and future contracts with Arizona because of tough new immigration law

The Los Angeles City Council, protesting Arizona’s crackdown on illegal immigration, on Wednesday voted to ban most city travel to Arizona and future contracts with companies in that state.

During a morning-long debate on the resolution, council members compared Arizona’s action to Nazi Germany and the beginning of the Holocaust, as well as the internment and deportation of Japanese Americans during World War II. A new Arizona law, which will take effect July 23, will require police to determine whether people they stop are in the country illegally, which critics say will lead to racial profiling.

“Los Angeles the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard,’’ said Councilman Ed Reyes, one of the resolution’s sponsors.  “As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be … deported, no questions asked. That is not American.’’

The action was approved 13-1, with Councilman Greig Smith casting the sole dissenting vote.

The council’s action fell short of a total boycott or canceling all of the city’s $58 million worth of contracts with Arizona companies. Officials with the Port of Los Angeles and Los Angeles International Airport expressed concern about potential effects on those agencies. The council asked boards overseeing the port, airport and city utilities to review all contracts with ties to Arizona, however.

LAX receives $22 million in revenue from two Arizona-based airlines -- US Airways and Mesa Air. The port relies on three Arizona firms for new, low-emission big rigs, part of the city’s “clean truck’’ program that is expected to reduce truck-related pollution at the port by 80% by 2012.

Randy Newman just cut a new single: I hate LA...

"Smog capped mountains, dying trees, look at that bum over there he's down on his knees! Look at these illegals, ain't number's like them nowhere!..Century Boulevard?, I HATE IT!... Santa Monica Boulevard?, I HATE IT! City Council re-tards? I HATE IT! I HATE IT! I AHTE IT! I hate LA!

The Arizona Law does not allow police to randomly question anyone they want. They can only question people if they break another law, speeding, drunk and disorderly conduct etc. The law also states they can't use race or color of skin in determining resonable suspicion. L.A Council should all read the actual law since it's clear they haven't. It won't be Nazi Germany or South Afirca, you won't need your passport or birth certificate. They are blowing this way out of proportion to force their liberal agenda of being a sactuary city on other states.

Whether L.A. boycotts Arizona or not, Arizona will boycott California until they agree to take all the illegals under their state financial mess and pay the tab for their liberalism.

Because of the internet I can now easily shop in Arizona and not pay CA sales tax. Boycotts can go both ways. I can't wait to see the city council in a protracted legal battle with the ITC and FAA.

Attention!!!
All ILLEGAL aliens. You have a waiting home in Los Angeles. Why stay in Arizona or any other state where you are not wanted? Move to LA where you will receive all the FREE services you will need. California is a rich and loving state. Bring all the kids and relatives.

I hated LA before...but they're dumb. I think Arizona is ridiculous..but I think LA is really just trying to get attention..they feel they dont have enough illegal immigrants trashing LA already..why not declare war on Arizona so all the nasty immigrants can come to LA and dirty it up more.
w00t... great decision LA..

Vote them all out of office except for Greig Smith. Any part of the boycott that impinges on interstate commerce is illegal, anyway, preempted by federal control under the constitution. Incompetents. They can't run the city. All they can do is complain.

Maybe if L.A. would do something like this then they wouldn't be in the dire financial strait they are in. Nobody seems to understand what AZ is trying to do - this has absolutely nothing to do with racism....it about ILLEGAL immigration! And then to hear the Mexican government to complain about it.....maybe if they would kick out all of their corrupt leaders and start taking care of their own citizens then they wouldn't have to come over here to try and make a living. They wouldn't have to give all of their hard earned money to a "coyote" to bring them across...then to just get caught and be sent back. We need immigration - but it needs to be done legally. If we were to do this in any other country (access it illegally instead of through proper channels) - you would be imprisoned...especially in Mexico. So City of Los Angeles - get your heads out of the clouds and out of your butts - you should be following Arizona - not banning them.

L.A. can fall into the ocean for all I care. In fact, America should BOYCOTT L.A.... According to the latest Pew Research statistics, 73% OF AMERICANS FAVOR THE ARIZONA IMMIGRATION LAW. Believe me, they will not be the only state enforcing it. If you want to become a citizen of this country, a law abiding citizen of this country, then do so LEGALLY.

Well, it looks to me the people of LA are fine with Arizona's new law. Something had to be done, its a shame our federal government has dragged its feet so long that Arizona felt like they had to do something and they did. California should think twice about giving the cold shoulder to one of her neighbors. Mexico is in a mess and from talks with people who have moved to South Carolina,(God help em) Arizona is being overrun. Never fear, Ruben Navarrette is a voice for the illegals.

With LA s financial problems should nt they be more worried about their own city.Start standing up for the people of LA.Villaraigosa is TERRIBLE if he was nt latino he would never win reelection. With their money and illegal problems thery need to look to Arizona for advice.Implement az plan and watch that red start moving towards the black

How 'bout that?-from the folks that brought you:
>a bankrupt city owned by unions
> a bankrupt state owned by unions
> a bankrupt Federal government
> sanctuary cities that flout the rule of law
> debt that will crush our country and turn it into Greece;
we get a ban on a state that is being overrun(as are we) with people breaking our laws, bringing in crime and violence, and a drug war across our border. We love legal immigrants, but letting the criminals control our border is unacceptable. Instead of fixing our problems, the Leftists that run our city and state and country ignore the will of the public and drag us down the road to ruin so they can import more future(Democratic) voters.

another dumb move by the city of LA CLEAN YOUR OWN HOUSE BEFORE YOU JUDGE OTHERS.

Since the LA City council approved the boycott, they should not let the Lakers play in Arizona, same thing here, the Suns are ban playing in Staples!!!

Third World LA has a bunch of criminal loving fools running it - I hope AZ decides not to sell power to LA.

We normal, sensible AMERICANS support you Arizona - you ROCK!

Glad to hear Los Angeles will be so welcoming to Arizona's illegal immigrants who are even now streaming in.

Cardinal Mahoney is full of Baloney...biggest lawbreaker in LA...
Protects illegal immigrants because they will make the Catholic church larger. ( I'm catholic by the way). He wouldn't be marching if the 10 million illegal immigrants were Islamic.
Frankly I'm against any illegal immigration. The federal government has failed and continues to fail. How about issuing ID cards to all LEGAL citizens. Therefore no one can get stop simply because of race or color....Ask EVERYONE to prove who is legal. Therefore no more profiling.

IDIOTS

ANTONIO VIARAGOSA CANT KEEP HIS PANTS ON, SCREWS HIS WIFE OVER NOW HE WANTS TO SCREW US OVER, THE CITY COUNSIL HAS NO TIME, MONEY FOR THIS STUPIDITY AT A TIME OF GLOBAL FINACIAL FAILURE AND THE RECENT TRADE IMBALANCE WE SHOULD NOT BE TURNING STATE AGAINST STATE, ANTONIO YOU ARE TRUELLY AND IDIOT AND THOSE WHO FOLLOW ARE FOOLS

UNTIED WE STAND DEVIDED WE FALL

TAKE CARE OF L.A. PROBLEMS AND LET ARIZONA TAKE CARE OF THIERS

A CONCERNED CITIZEN OF LA & THE WORLD

Absolutely unbelievable.

Starts to explain why the City of Los Angeles won't take action against the illegal aliens that steal from our recycling bins each week despite many calls to LAPD.

Starts to explain why I get ticket for jaywalking but illegals sell crap at every intersection with impunity.

Apparently our laws don't apply to illegals. Way to go council!!

AZ should boycott the energy it supplies to Los Angeles. This is a waste of time. Keep up the good work ARIZONA. I wish California would enforce the laws.

LA City coucil - acting to create more division and hate and anger in opposition to the will of the vast majority of the people.

Shame.

"The action was approved 13-1, with Councilman Greig Smith casting the sole dissenting vote."

I am ashamed to say that Janice Hahn is supposed to be representing me, yet she initiated this agenda item as well as others that I am totally against. She has her eye on the Lt. Governor seat and a broader political life. Everyone needs to remember her name and vote against her (and the others who cast a yes vote on this)in the future, as she does not have your best interests in mind; only wants to further her political career.

absolutely the most ridiculous off-based, biased story I've run across. These incompetent, self-serving people in city government have nothing to do to improve the lives of it's LEGAL residents.

Instead, the spend a day of OUR taxpayer dollar pay to argue over something to try focusing the attention away from the real problems which need attention in our community.

Stupid politicians so worried about the future when a minority group becomes the majority. To stay in office, they will ALWAYS vote to tax more (take away more from working citizens) and create more programs to take care of the "needy".

Well when government starts taking care of all the needy, the needy can just stop sweating the details about financially plan for the "big" family they keep starting.

Arizonans are my hero!

This is a response to LA City Council voting to boycott Arizona over it's tough new immigration law SB 1070:

I am calling for an economic and tourism boycott of the 3rd world ghetto cesspool of LA. I cannot think of any positives to come out of an economic boycott of Arizona. Most folks would rather visit the famous and beautiful redrock scenery of Arizona than visit the nasty, smoggy, hot, muggy, traffic- choked, 3rd world graffiti-ed ghetto cesspool of LA. I have called from my twitter and facebook accounts for summer tourism boycotts of the illegal-alien haven, loonyville leftist cities of LA and San Francisco.

I understand why LA City Council took this immature action, which is tantamount to a child throwing a temper tantrum due to its helplessness and anger. CC needed to to create a political diversion to distract the public and pander to their huge Latino/illegal alien base.

LA City Council is basically a useless irrelevant body unable to deal with LA's intractable problems such as 14 %-25% UE rate, 70% of LA being a 3rd world ghetto packed with illegals , 1/2 of city population collecting direct welfare handouts, gangs running amok, city treasury 500 million in the red, extortionist DWP rate hikes, unions & their political whores squeezing taxpayers & small businesses , 10% sales tax, 40% black market economy, and about a 100 other problems in this largely ghettoized BK city. It is easier to engage in stupid political resolutions/silly boycotts than deal with the real intractable problems in the city.

Its time to hear our voice against this boycott!!! Let's rally in front of LA city hall. Let's show them what we got!!!
