L.A. City Council votes to ban travel and future contracts with Arizona because of tough new immigration law

The Los Angeles City Council, protesting Arizona’s crackdown on illegal immigration, on Wednesday voted to ban most city travel to Arizona and future contracts with companies in that state.

During a morning-long debate on the resolution, council members compared Arizona’s action to Nazi Germany and the beginning of the Holocaust, as well as the internment and deportation of Japanese Americans during World War II. A new Arizona law, which will take effect July 23, will require police to determine whether people they stop are in the country illegally, which critics say will lead to racial profiling.

“Los Angeles the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard,’’ said Councilman Ed Reyes, one of the resolution’s sponsors.  “As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be … deported, no questions asked. That is not American.’’

The action was approved 13-1, with Councilman Greig Smith casting the sole dissenting vote.

The council’s action fell short of a total boycott or canceling all of the city’s $58 million worth of contracts with Arizona companies. Officials with the Port of Los Angeles and Los Angeles International Airport expressed concern about potential effects on those agencies. The council asked boards overseeing the port, airport and city utilities to review all contracts with ties to Arizona, however.

LAX receives $22 million in revenue from two Arizona-based airlines -- US Airways and Mesa Air. The port relies on three Arizona firms for new, low-emission big rigs, part of the city’s “clean truck’’ program that is expected to reduce truck-related pollution at the port by 80% by 2012.

These council people just want my vote and think because I'm Mexican, I can be bought off like this. I came here legally and proudly but now I feel ashamed because I'm grouped in with a bunch people who think it is OK to break the law...that they somehow deserve to be here. Other ethnic groups had to pay their dues...so should we so we can stand toe-to-toe with them. Hey L.A. Counsel....how about doing the job you were elected to do? Oh I forgot, you want to do everything you can to distract people from your failures.

Good! Let the Hollywood left deal with the illegals in their backyard!

The town is as corrupt as they come. Those paying taxes there are wasting their money.

With the gangs on the loose and Obama's minions in the courts, there is not much hope for the City of the Angels.

The angels are moving to Arizona.

In the state of Arizona, as in California, in order to get a drivers license you must present proof of residency whether it be a birth certificate or green card. Therefore if you get pulled over by the police and you present a valid drivers license you have nothing to worry about. So how is asking for a drivers license so wrong? Also, if you actually take the time to READ the law as opposed to taking the LIES from the LIBERAL media as the truth you will see that the police cannot simply pull you over for 'looking the part' They must pull you over for a legitimate reason, such as a traffic violation. It's about time this country does something to stop illegal immigration. Good job Arizona!

WOW.....all of the high taxes, dysfunction and controversy this state brings on itself- and now I'M FINALLY DAMN PROUD OF IT!!!!!! WAY TO LA!!

BOYCOTT LOS ANGELES!!!
Arizona is not commiting apparteid, slavery, or segregation, Janice. They only want to secure their border and stop ILLEGAL immigration, which is AGAINST FEDERAL LAW!!! What a bunch of bozos in the L.A. council. Glad I live in O.C.

It might help if Councilman Ed Reyes actually sat down and read SB1070.

But I suppose he's afraid he might catch racist cooties or something.

Too bad we the people can't vote on recalling our City Clowncil members.

Idiots one and all.

>>Councilman Ed Reyes, one of the resolution’s sponsors said “As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be … deported, no questions asked. That is not American.".

This type of comment made you looked stupid Councilman Ed Reyes. Learn how to read before you open your mouth (the law is not even implement yet until 7/23/2010). Any how the Law said that the police will have to pull you over for an infraction (speeding, broken head light, etc) first before they can ask you for your legal paper if they think you are illegal. Let take your example of the worsted cast scenario that the cop said your picture doesn't match. The police will turn you over to ICE because only ICE can deport you, please demonstrate you are a policy maker by read the policy first before saying anything. Man, I don't mind people boycott for their own believe but when idiot people in government comment about thing they don't know just make me feel mad.

The Sanctuary State of California may--BOYCOTT--Arizona. But you wait--because the Lax illegal alien policies, will have them arriving shortly in LA and SF, palms outstretched for free welfare handouts. Not just border states will suffer from the Exodus of illegal aliens from Arizona. Deval Patrick, the Governor of Illinois need to be recalled as many other Governor, Mayor who cater to the invasion plans. Any state is games whose policies are not restrictive and they will soon find their coffers are drained from the invasion that has propagated in the last twenty five years. When politicians remain indifferent to Americas wishes, this is the consequences of incompetence. Remember to send these Pro-illegal alien, anti-sovereignty elected officials out of office. ALL POLITICIANS WILL BE SENT A RESONATING MESSAGE BEGINNING WITH SENATOR HARRY REID (D-NV) & DARRELL STEINBERG (D-CA) IN JUNE PRIMARIES OR RECALL THEM. HE LEADS THE PRO-AMNESTY POLITICAL ZEALOTS AND MUST BE EJECTED. Join over a million members of NumbersUSA to stop this plague.

Good job, council. Are you that out of touch with people? A majority across the nation support this law. Perhaps you should pay attention to your constituents instead of worrying about securing new ones through amnesty. Shame on the LA City Council. We should boycott downtown LA in return!

I don't think these politicans even actually read the bill - you can have your contracts along with all of our illegals - no problem they are all yours.....

Who cares what LA does, they condone molestation by priests and the mismanagement by the Mayor, city counsel, and the cost of Illegal immigrant crime as well as the cost for the free ride provided to them will soon cause the city, county and state to go bankrupt! HA HA HA, that is exactally what you pompas fools get, take all the illegals into your homes and pay for them so tax payers can stop getting raped!

Oh Please. LA needs to grow up!

Why?
Because the Mayor says so?
Arizona is right.
This was started with the Murder of a Farmer by snakeheads last Jan.
Where are all you bleeding hearts when it comes to this farmer's family.
Have you setup a trust fund for them?
LA is in no position do be so snooty with its budget problems.
1700 people getting laid off, and they're pulling this.
It makes no sense.

The city of tucson appreciates the actions taken by the city of Los Angeles to "BOYCOTT "Arizona. It is good to know that the immigrant community here in the Nazi-zona still has the support of immigrant based city's. Let the WORLD KNOW what ATROCITIES are happening here IN ARIZONA... We sure don't want another SEATTLE POLICE DEPARTMENT anywhere in the United States. I thank in behalf of the Latino/Hispanic community in Tucson everyone against Law 1070 and in favor of BOYCOTT Arizona...

If illegal immegrants are allowed to break the law and benefit from it at tax payers' expense then why not let all the menand women in the over crowded jails and prisons free. Breaking the law is breaking the law. AZ even though I don't agree with there actions someone needed to take the first step. AZ is telling the rest of America "Our citizens come first!" what is CA telling its citizens. CA can't balance its budget but CA can protest immigration, the mayor and governor have their priorities out of order.

STOP GIVING THESE LATINO MOTHERS A FREE HAVE A BABY RIDE IN ORDER FOR CHILDREN TO GAIN CITIZENSHIP ONE PARENT NEEDS TO BE A LEGAL CITIZEN. THAT IS WHERE THE LAW NEEDS TO CHANGE

Ed Reyes is either an idiot or a bald-faced liar - or both. The law about which he speaks does not allow for "no-questions asked" deportation - in fact, the law specifically demands that immigration status be investigated. AND only the federal government can deport a person. Of course we know that Mr. Reyes has no problem with the federal government doing its job in that respect (excuse me while I throw up)

You can bet the city of L.A. will continue doing business with hundreds of firms that subcontract to Arizona companies (not to mention the big energy concerns that provide the city with electricity). This is nothing but political posturing and pandering. I am going to Cold Stone Creamery tonight for a double scoop of Arizona's finest.

LOL. I have been doing the opposite, trying to buy everything I can from businesses in Arizona, one even threw in some extra stuff because I told them I was buying from them to SUPPORT the law in Arizona. Its a FEDERAL Law after all, it is actually the law here too, its the law in EVERY STATE, Arizona is just enforcing it.

ALL Americans must carry 'papers"...if you dont have them and dont speak english you are most likely here illegally, go home, let a legal immigrant take your place.

This quote has got to be the most ignorant and ill-informed comment I have heard to date! It is the kind of hyperbole that goes unquestioned, although it's patently ridiculous and outrageous. I cannot believe that these so-called officials don't have anything better to do (such as the City of L.A.'s business?!) than to pass ridiculous resolutions. Also, what about the FACT that the City of LA buys its electricity from an Arizona power plant? Are they going to stop doing that, too? No, because this is all for show...part of the typical pandering to the special interests who run this city.

This ridiculous City Council ignores its own citizens who want to speak up on issues of importance to them (Wesson had to leave to see his new granddaughter, ignoring the 200 citizens who took time off work to speak their minds) and instead wastes time with garbage like this. It's time to vote them all out.

It seems Councilman Greig Smith is the only one deserving to hold office. When we start boycotting states because they decide to crackdown on illegal activities then we really have gone wrong. As far as I'm concerned the Governor of Arizona is presidential material.

It is childish for the "city" of Los Angeles to get involved in another state's business. This boycott hurts the same people LA is alleging trying to protect. LA is in a budget crises and unable to use thier brains to think of a solution other than simply to raise taxes to fix their spending habits. LA needs to focus on its financial mess instead of using its time to boycot another state; children are in office of LA.

Right now council should be considering and spending more time on key issues like budget deficit and pension problems. But on the contrary they have been debating about low priority issues like immigration law in Arizona.
Great going LA council for costing the city budget another 50+ million dollars in revenue coming from Arizona.
Good Luck with Budget Balancing.

As Thomas Gray said, 'Where ignorance is bliss, tis folly to be wise!'

The LA City Council is absolutely, blatantly ignorant and should all be voted out of office.

While their city is underwater and steeped in debt, issuing of thousands of pink slips to school teachers and other city workers, outsourcing jobs because they have undermined the very system which made their city great and as a result losing millions in revenue, they decide they want to waste taxpayers money on interfering in another state's business.

LA City Council and Janice Hahn you need to brush up on your CA history. If you recall Caesar Chavez was totally against illegal immigration. So if you wish to boycott, please be sure to spread your tentacles across the entire UNITED STATES OF AMERICA as this illegal immigration law is a federal law! LA City Council your blatant ignorance is showing!

Los Angeles, San Fran, etc. are officially on the American city boycott list. L.A. supports illegal activities. L.A. is why America is bankrupt and sinking fast. L.A. is just flat out pathetic.

Amazing. This City can't even run it's own business and it has the unmitigated gall to stick its collective noses in Arizona's business. Look out for the influx of MORE AND MORE ILLEGALS into California and Los Angeles.

This could be the early signs of a CALIMEXICO.
