L.A. City Council votes to ban travel and future contracts with Arizona because of tough new immigration law

The Los Angeles City Council, protesting Arizona’s crackdown on illegal immigration, on Wednesday voted to ban most city travel to Arizona and future contracts with companies in that state.

During a morning-long debate on the resolution, council members compared Arizona’s action to Nazi Germany and the beginning of the Holocaust, as well as the internment and deportation of Japanese Americans during World War II. A new Arizona law, which will take effect July 23, will require police to determine whether people they stop are in the country illegally, which critics say will lead to racial profiling.

“Los Angeles the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard,’’ said Councilman Ed Reyes, one of the resolution’s sponsors.  “As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be … deported, no questions asked. That is not American.’’

The action was approved 13-1, with Councilman Greig Smith casting the sole dissenting vote.

The council’s action fell short of a total boycott or canceling all of the city’s $58 million worth of contracts with Arizona companies. Officials with the Port of Los Angeles and Los Angeles International Airport expressed concern about potential effects on those agencies. The council asked boards overseeing the port, airport and city utilities to review all contracts with ties to Arizona, however.

LAX receives $22 million in revenue from two Arizona-based airlines -- US Airways and Mesa Air. The port relies on three Arizona firms for new, low-emission big rigs, part of the city’s “clean truck’’ program that is expected to reduce truck-related pollution at the port by 80% by 2012.

Has a major city's council had a worse day than Los Angeles' had today? Have stupider comments been made about immigration?

Hello People in Arizona. Please do not hold this political dance against the people of California. We do not like our politicians. As you will read in many posts, we are on your side. Don't allow those self-serving politicians to instigate hatred between the people of the two states. Many Californians have posted that they will spend their vacation in Arizona and buy from Arizona companies. Please believe me, we do what we can... we are with you...

Sooooo, California wants to boycott Arizona, eh? Can you say BACKLASH boys and girls??...I knew you could!

Being a legal immigrant and having my own business, I welcome the steps by Arizona to stem the crime, identity theft, violence, welfare fraud, insurance fraud, and their support to legal business enterprise in Arizona.

I know of illegal hispanics, brazilians, and canadian illegals planning to move to other states because of Arizona's law. I hope they move to California. PS my California customers just got a 10% increase in buying my products.

Wow, a State passes a law to enforce Federal law and Los Angeles decides to boycott that State? ...just when I thought things couldn't get worse here in CA.

It is also very hypocritical because CA goes against Federal law by making medical marijuana legal.

Basically, CA is saying that they don't believe in Federal laws.

Why the hell can't our cities, States, and Federal government straighten out the economy first, so I can find a job after being out of work for over 2 years, and then start playing these petty games?!?

What a bunch of Idiots. These are the people who are leading us. LOL. What a joke. I wonder if it ever dawned on them, that the people of this city and state have there own problems these people should be concerned with.

Why doen't the city council terminate all water and power agreements with Arizona ?

What a bunch of hypocrites in LA city hall.

There is no such thing as an ILLEGAL FAN. Therefore NO Tickets will be required for Lakers- Suns games. No ticket taker will be heard to say "ticket please" which kind of sounds like 'Papers Please". In addition you can sit wherever you want. We are calling for Redistribution of seating. Just cause you have more money don't mean you get the best seat anymore!

Shame on Los Angeles! Shame on the politicians who call Arizonans Nazis! Shame on the L.A. City Council members who insult American veterans of World War II.

After reading the new bill, 1070, I am totally for it. The bill mirrors the federal bill that politicians do not want to enforce. Instead of trying to change the law they allowed Arizona to be harmed by illegal immigration violations (www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis). People who want to give Mexican citizens special treatment are using racism to stifle their opponents. But I find it interesting they are not defending the millions of people from Asia, Africa, Europe and South American who also want to come to the U.S. And why is no one complaining about every other countries laws that prevent undocumented workers from trespassing???

It's incredible that the elected officials used taxpayer time and money to spend discussing and voting on this issue. And, did they survey the residents of LA before they madet this bold decision? I say put the vote to the people. From the comments on this website, the AZ law might pass in CA too.

Stupid is as stupid does. LA City Council is certifiably stupid. Add in willful ignorance on the DWP rate hikes and these bozos are a public menace.

You may want to reconsider this irrational decision. Arizona holds all the aces here. For instance: Arizona has complete control over your agriculture and border entry and exit points from your state to the rest of the nation. We, Arizona, could if we wanted to completely shut down all interstate traffic into and out of your state for any length of time necessary to counter your boycott throwing your ag industry into complete dissary. The ramifications here could be enormous to say the least. Are you really sure you want to continue with this boycott. Los Angeles you started a fight that you may really not win. But, good luck with all your newly laid off farm workers trying to find a job if Arizona goes ahead with strict agriculture checks and border inspections ad infinitum.

I plan to boycott LA county until they revoke their ban on Arizona. (That is about $1,000 a year on just entertainment). I no longer plan to attend events or even buy gas in LA. But I wont be so stupid as to boycott the Angel's baseball team just because they have the name LA in their title ... you guys should be embarrassed.

I went through several pages and found no one who thinks this is a good idea.

when the leaders are so out of step with the voters, changes will be made

This is getting out of control. We have laws about illegal immigration. The police should able to ask anyone they se fit to prove that they are here legally. If the police would ask me, I will be happy as it means they're doing their job and that illegal immigration SERIOUSLY.

What are they going to demand next? That the police can not perform an alcohol test if a driver appears to be drunk?

To have illegal immigrants flocking outside Home Depot etc. and the police aren't doing anything about it, is a joke.

And don't compare this to nazi Germany please. This isn't even remotely related. As long as we have a laws regarding immigration, the police should be able to enforce it. Nothing strange about that.

"Stupid" is not a strong enough word. Just imagine if other states had been boycotting California over Prop. 8 or some other law they disagree with.

Who is this going to hurt? It won't hurt the politicians, I can promise you that. Instead it will hurt lots of regular hard working people in the trade and tourism industries. All to make a point.

This gesture is ignorant, short-sighted, and based on a lie. The lie is that there is something racist or unconstitutional about this law. If that were true, then these morons on the council would be eagerly awaiting the court decision casting down Arizona's law. But they know that's not going to happen so they resort to this foolish and destructive tactic. You people are monsters, abusing your authority.

And what would change if Arizona repealed the law? Nothing would change in the law except who would be charged to enforce it. Except the Feds don't have the stomach to do it. Will we be boycotting the U.S.A. next? Huh? Morons?!

I can't wait for Arizona to start turning off our water and our electricity. You people are idiots.

... and if Mr Reyes sets foot into Arizona arrest him and send him to Sherrif Joe's camp. Keep him there for a long long time..It is one thing to solicit votes by scrooing the tax payers of California, but to compare Arizona to Nazi Germany is down right criminal. Where the US laws written by Adolf and Co? So, people who uphold the laws are now the Nazis and people who abide by the laws are criminals?

In support of Arizona, my colleagues and I will no longer be purchasing California products for use in our restaurants here in the Austin area.

dear councilman...I have never written a sitting member of our local government before today. I am absolutely furious with all those American's that are treating the Arizona attempt to save their state from lawless criminals illegally coming into our country. Your and Ms. Hahn action against Arizona is abhorent to me as a citizen and tax payer of Los Angeles for some 43 years. I am in Greg Smiths district and am so thankful for that. I commit to you today, that I will financially support whom ever runs against you next cycle. You are so what we don't need in government today. You and your colleges have run this city into the ground and what's amazing is that you don't REALLY REALIZE what you have done. Take care of our city FIRST. So far you are doing a lousy job. Let Arizona run their state and cities. You concentrate on what you and elected representatives like you have done to our city and fix it.

Shame on you LA - You are a disgrace to the United States. You coddle these illegals that are dragging you right down the drain. I don't believe that most California citizens agree with what you are doing - City council, you are sick, sick, sick. It's time we quit pussy footing around with illegal aliens. They are criminals who rob our school system dollars, our welfare dollars, fill our emergency rooms, steal our IDs, our social security numbers and whatever else they can get their hands on. Yes they want to "make a better life" but they want to steal yours to get it!!!!!

Well, we Arizonan's now have reason to go somewhere else this year for vacations..., no Disneyland, no Knotts berry farm, no Universal studios, no BH, no Santa Monica, no South bay beaches, no Hollywood, no Hotels, no restaurants, no shopping, no sports, no zoos. NOTHING..

To hell with LA... I will spend my vacation dollars elsewhere.... You want a fight.... you got one... How dare you!!!!

PS... Get your water and power somewhere else... I will be voting every chance I get to make those things happen. I will do what I can to spread the word here in AZ to drum up like minded folks to start our own little boycott... And I will scoff at anyone planning to go there...
A 20 year Arizona resident, from Van Nuys Ca.

I don't understand why everyone is so upset with Arizona.Everyone explains this law as a new law, which in fact it is a law that has been around since the forties. In order to be a sovereign nation we must protect our boarders and our people.Good for Arizona, I hope other states follow. And for the record I'm a immigrant.

Why don't they compare what's going on in Israel with the Palestinians? That's a big holocaust.
