L.A. City Council votes to ban travel and future contracts with Arizona because of tough new immigration law

The Los Angeles City Council, protesting Arizona’s crackdown on illegal immigration, on Wednesday voted to ban most city travel to Arizona and future contracts with companies in that state.

During a morning-long debate on the resolution, council members compared Arizona’s action to Nazi Germany and the beginning of the Holocaust, as well as the internment and deportation of Japanese Americans during World War II. A new Arizona law, which will take effect July 23, will require police to determine whether people they stop are in the country illegally, which critics say will lead to racial profiling.

“Los Angeles the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard,’’ said Councilman Ed Reyes, one of the resolution’s sponsors.  “As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be … deported, no questions asked. That is not American.’’

The action was approved 13-1, with Councilman Greig Smith casting the sole dissenting vote.

The council’s action fell short of a total boycott or canceling all of the city’s $58 million worth of contracts with Arizona companies. Officials with the Port of Los Angeles and Los Angeles International Airport expressed concern about potential effects on those agencies. The council asked boards overseeing the port, airport and city utilities to review all contracts with ties to Arizona, however.

LAX receives $22 million in revenue from two Arizona-based airlines -- US Airways and Mesa Air. The port relies on three Arizona firms for new, low-emission big rigs, part of the city’s “clean truck’’ program that is expected to reduce truck-related pollution at the port by 80% by 2012.

Hypocrites, do a total boycott or none at all.

Do you all know that the Red Light Traffic Cameras are monitored and run by a company called Redflex Traffic Systems & this money grab company is based in Phoenix, AZ? From Redflex Website: "This is a significant honor for Redflex. Phoenix is one of the largest cities in the U.S. and is home to our
expanded U.S. corporate headquarters. When it comes to photo enforcement, we have always observed the City of Phoenix to be one of the most knowledgeable and experienced cities in the country." OK, so not only are these unconstitutional ugly devices a blight on our beautiful land, they are run by a truly questionable company. Please, everyone, we must riot like the wonderful people in Greece!! Down w/these horrific eyesores!! And btw, Anahiem CA has banned them for good. Because they know what a slippery slope they are!!! Peace now~

Good for you Greig.

It sure is awful for a state to crack down on ILLEGAL immigration. Yeah, they ought to welcome a bunch of people breaking the law, especially the ones with drugs/guns!

I guess if the Federal Government actually FOLLOWED THE LAW, Los Angeles would boycott it, too. (one can only wish)

This is kind of funny that the Council is spending so much time on this when we have other really important issues going on here. uh like the budget.

This idea is as dumb as the Council telling landlords they can not raise the rent .

Council members, I ask you; who is paying for all of the "illegal" immigrants services here in LA?

wow this is unbelievable, LA is declaring economic civil war against Arizona...and I love the pic of cardinal Roger Maphoney walking had and had like he gives a spit about illegals, all he cares about is the money they pour into the church...

Ed Reyes is either a bald face liar or a complete moron. His choice. Arizona is simply enacting already existing federal immigration law. Nothing more. Nothing less. No other state in the country has the cojones to step up and face the illegal immigration plague head on and they are doing it because their citizens are being murdered by drug runners and smugglers. The city of Phoenix averages over 1 kidnapping per day, far more than any other state, and almost entirely due to the drug cartels and illegal immigration. Anyone who does not support Arizona is by default supporting the drug cartels, the Mexican Mafia, and others who need an open boarder stay in business.
The L.A. city council has once again shown that they, with the notable exception of Greg Smith, do not care about the people, have not actually read the legislation, and are crawling all over themselves for camera time.

Well, glad to see this was well thought out... Yet another stupid action based on emotion, not fact... LAX is right, US Airways is based in Arizona, yet US Airways didn't pass the law LA Council wants to protest, so why boycott a 3rd party who just happens to be in the crossfire? Imagine Arizona boycotting California for a similar reason. It's just dumb all around.

Again, the LA City Council does something very stupid, blinded by emotion, rejecting fact and common sense.

wow, this country is heading downhill fast

Well, I vote to boycott LA............
I will be finding a new source of supplies for my business - Hopefully Arizona....
What pompous jerks.......... Maybe LA needs to fund itself and all of its illegals without any money from the outside. See how well you do when you are boycotted

It shows you out of step the far-left loons on the council are. 60% of Americans are in favor of the ILLEGAL immigration law. The law enforces FEDERAL immigration laws that are the law of the land. Does teh council actually think that illegal immigration is a good thing? Look at what has happened to the city of L.A. over the last 15-20 years with uncontrolled illegal immigration!

Considering L.A.'s and California's escalating problems, this council is clearly misguided in its focus and priorities. Regrettably, they have chosen to mis-direct their attention to "feel good" Liberal action to appease their illegal constituents. If they would only take the time to read the actual text of the Arizona law, understanding that it mirrors federal law--and enforces what the feds have failed to. The greatest ignorance is to reject something you know nothing about--indeed, there is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.

I cannot believe the stupidity of the LA City Council. Why do they have to be the big bully? Let Arizona take care of their problems! This is not the business of Los Angeles. In case you hadn't noticed, Los Angeles has its own business to tend to.

I wonder when the citizen of this city and this state drive you "council" morons into the desert

Coming from a sanctuary city and from a mayor that encourages illegal immigration I'm sure Arizona's not worried. Kudos to Arizona. Shame on the L.A. city council. You're a disgrace.

That has to be one of the dumbest councils in the United States. Not too unexpected, however. Just remember this: it may be that the Arizonans will boycott Los Angeles, and their companies will refuse to do business with you. This also means less jobs for foreign workers, who staff those entities catering to business stays and entertainment.

Everyone likes to mention the word "profiling"; how do you not profile and then solve crimes. Most illegals are Hispanic, don't speak English, and compromise a high degree of the criminal activity. So why would the police waste their time searching the car of an elderly white woman? If you are truly seeking the Truth, and want to solve this type of problem, how about you produce the known facts of crime, and the illegals. Believe me, people of all nations will be grabbed if they are illegal. This has no comparison to Nazi Germany, and only the stupid would ever suggest such an idea. That amounts to Communism, and I see little difference between the two factions. How you people got elected to the Council is anyone's guess, and it sure as hell wasn't based on real knowledge.

So does that mean that the Lakers are not going to travel to Phoenix to get their heads kicked in by the Suns?

This is so ridiculous!

Arizona law is just enforcing Federal law. There is nothing racist about it. And those that are offended by this need to take a look at our borders and who is crossing it. Mexico doesn't allow this..why can we protect our borders.

It's apparent who runs the city council...not the legal citizens that for sure!

Just remember what goes around comes around. Before you run off on a wild hair, I would consider the potential for repercussions. I am not necessarily for the AZ immigration law but I do think that is a right of the state. AZ could take similar steps against some law that offended them and before long you have all the states boycotting the others because they disagree on something. It is rather immature for LA to take any positions. Let individuals make their own minds up on these issues and quit catering to hispanics....they can take care of themselves.

I'm sorry... I had to stop reading after the comparing of Arizona to Nazi Germany. The hot air blowing off my computer screen from the self-sanctimonious words made me laugh out loud.

If Arizona is compared to Nazi Germany, then let's call a spade a spade and look at California's "American" values.

California had concentration camps designed specifically for the Japanese-Americans in World War II. Yes, I know... they were (and still are) called "Relocation Camps." But let's be honest... where were the German-American and Italian-American "Relocation" camps? Why were only the Japanese-Americans singled out? I mean, isn't that what Arizona is being accused of, singling out a minority population? And please make note: these were Japanese-AMERICANS... Americans, born and raised on American soil, of Japanese descent. Not illegal immigrants. Yet California saw fit in all its glory to imprison AMERICANS against their will and, theoretically, for their own protection.

Grow up, Los Angeles and California. Seriously.

The bottom line is that the immigration is illegal. ILL-LE-GAL. PERIOD. We can't expect Mexico to do things "the American way" and issue work visa's or permits into the US. The real issue isn't illegal immigration, but the poor anti-human Mexican government and their failure to provide for their own citizens.

But no worries... the US is close behind them.

That photo says it all. The Catholic church needs more members. Just like Democrats need more members. To wit ,Hispanics are primarily democrat and catholic. How much would one sell his soul for? I am a Christian first, American second, and hispanic last.

Nazi Germany? This is a ridiculous comparison. Is Arizona sending illegal immigrants to gas chambers? Do you really want to know what is like Nazi Germany? There are so few parallels of such evil – Soviet gulags under Stalin, the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia, and the Armenian genocide in Turkey. That’s it. Greig Smith is the only intelligent guy on this matter in our pathetic City Council.

And pleeeeze, by all means, STOP MOVING HERE!!!! Stay in California. We don't want your liberal asses screwing up our state! Think junk bond ratings, biggest state deficit in the country...

LA City Council...just remember what happen to Gray Davis when he thought he was too big to respect the will of the people.

I see big changes coming in the next election.

Nazi Germany??? Deportation of Japanese Americans during World War II??? Are you kidding me LACC. Everyone on this Council is officially retarded and need to be removed. I see that Roger Mahony has taken time out of covering up priest molesting little boys to join in this we want what we didn't earn march.
