Federal agents raid Culver City marijuana dispensary [Updated]

Federal agents and L.A. police officers raided a Culver City medical marijuana dispensary Thursday.

[Updated at 12:47 p.m.: An earlier version of this post said the dispensary was in Marina del Rey.]

[Updated at 12:38 p.m.: Culver City police also participated in the raid.]

Witnesses reported seeing several officers and cars congregating about 10 a.m. around Organica Collective at 13456 Washington Blvd., said officials with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

At least three people were detained against a graffiti-covered storage truck, a witness said. [Updated at 12:47 p.m.: The witness, Erin Olf, an office manager at Rainbow Acres Natural Foods, said she saw the three handcuffed and standing in front of the truck.]

DEA spokeswoman Sarah Pullen confirmed the agency was serving warrants at the collective, which has been raided in the past. She could not confirm whether any arrests had been made.

This place was raided in 2008 and 2009 yet it remained in business. I'm assuming that since Organica Collective remained in business they are operating within the law. Well, the law as it has been interpreted by the AG and the courts. In the raid in 2009, even the IRS participated in the raid. What does the City and Feds have against the owener of this collective?

I am not surprised. I was partners with the owner, Jeff, for about 6 months when he first opened, and warned him repeatedly that his business practices would result in DEA raids. Luckily I had left him well before any assault weapons were pointed in my face.

He held quite a number of parties in the rest of the warehouse where Ecstasy and other drugs were readily available. The dispensary was not secure. Receipts were not kept. AND the dispensary room borders Culver City, which is not dispensary-friendly. The whole compound is one large hippie flophouse.

It's too bad that Jeff doesn't learn or plan better. He has a fighting spirit which I admire, but he just leaves too many loose ends.

Where is President Obama and his promise to end the raids on dispensaries??? When will the DEA get the memo??

Everywhere I look I find about +80% for medical cannabis and above 50 percent on complete legalization with the numbers gaining each time a poll is taken. We're tired of spending money on the myopic dea(th) who, apparently, only see people who use cannabis. Geez, why can't the dea go after the meth problem. I almost never see the dea going after anything but cannabis. Raiding businesses over and over expecting cannabis to go away. Isn't that the definition of insanity?

The days of prohibition are coming to a close. I guess they want a few more raids to remember the good ole' days. If public opinion is so close to outright legalization, then why all the police action?

Legalize (again) and regulate.

The Culver City is making arrests in LA county jurisdiction, these raids should not happen to medical patients. They are invading patient's privacy laws and are ILLEGAL in California! I only hope that AB390 will pass the ballot in November so that the state can regulate and decriminalize marijuana.

This is a shame. Until the President steps up and removes marijuana from schedule 1 we will be under attack. The DEA does not care about what the leader of our country says or our Attorney General. Now is the time for all of us to come out of the cannabis closet and demand they stop arresting medical marijuana people. They are now attacking the other states. We need to have a day of national protest. March 26 2010.

is this what politicians mean by 'public safety' when they increase our taxes? utterly worthless.

Wow. This must be "Change You Can Believe In" I thought Holder said they were going to leave the dispensaries alone in CA and respect our state laws regarding medicinal marijuana.

The DEA is a dirty little mark on our American flag. They represent the slow DEAth and erosion of the US Constitution.

I work in the building next to the dispensary. The DEA come in weapons drawn adrenaline pumping and really targeted some innocent bystanders profiling. The men who were seen in cuffs being held against the graffitti covered truck were AT&T subcontractors doing work in my building. They were taken at gun point cuffed and treated like criminals, when I asked them why seeing as they were NOT in the dispensary but in my building I was told they fit the profile?? I am assuming because 3 of the four men had tattoos.
Seeing as I work next door to the dispensary my safty concern is not from the medical marijuana but the DEA agents and police officers that seem to be overly aggressive with guns drawn pulling these raids.
What gets to me is I live in Venice, we all know where the real drugs are being sold and housed why is it these same officers don't pursue those targets with the same gusto?? Why is it the dispensaries they target?

this is so wrong. dispensaries pay taxes like any other legitimate business. Why is the government wasting so much time and money that is safe than any other product that we already regulate and distribute? It makes no sense.

Sheriff Baca should be restricting the DEA from carrying out raids on legal dispensaries in LA and other Sheriff's around the state should do so also. The county sheriff is the highest ranking law enforcement officer in a county and has the right and the duty to protect California citizens from rogue federal agents.

wow this is realy sad organica has barely been open for 4 months, and they just had a movie night saturday about getting raided, and how they got started. im scared that im gonna be in a dispesary when it gets raided. what do they want from us? do we have to go back to hitting up the weedman who is inconsistent, usually located in a gang affiliated neighborhood, and 9 times out of ten sells e, crack and whatever else.

Do you government fascists think you are God or something to tell me I can’t relieve my suffering? Leave me the hell alone! I’m not hurting anyone, I am just trying to live my short life the best I can. I hope someday people will mind their own damn business. I doubt they ever will . There is just too much money to be made making innocent American’s into criminals!

Jeff is my brother. I want to set the record straight. He was running Organica legally, as defined by the LA City Council Ordinance. We verified every patient, medicine was packaged the correct way, taxes were being paid. I could go on and on..... The DEA knows why they keep targeting him...His family knows and we are going to fight this to the end!!!!!!!

Ed, You obviously haven't been to Organica in a really long time. There are no hippies hanging out, nobody lives there, It was a tightly run ship.

THIS IS INSANE!

Jeff Joseph and Organica are in full compliance of all local laws. There has never been any illegal activities going on there. Jeff is a solid operator with a good business sense - he is a patient activist who is running a collective the right way!

Targeting a popular compliant collective is a strategic way to scare everyone into shutting down and gives the impression that if a leader within the Medical Marijuana is being threatened by the DEA everyone should be scared and not fight for patient rights and access to medicine voted legal by the state of California.

Anyone who has ever visited the clinic knows that it is one of the most solid collectives out there. Not sure where the hippies and shadyness have been hiding??

This is such a waste of resources to punish a collective, who have been helping patients, paying taxes, following the law, and contributing to the community and neighborhood.

What a shame. Strangely enough it is one of the few collectives that is in full compliance of the new ordinance that just got voted and signed by the mayor. Does LA really want ANY collectives???? This is a sure way to keep as many people away from MMJ as possible.

It is up to the congress of the United States to end these med/mari raids. Congress makes the laws. The Justice Department and DEA enforce the laws made by congress.

If you want the raids to stop then march on the offices of your members of congress and demand that the raids be stopped. This is the only way that it will happen.

I for one am glad to know that this guy owns the business , as he owes me money and I have a judgement against him and he never paid me, so now I know where I can collect . Crying poverty and owning a business making $ 400,000 a year ! ?
One word : KARMA . He's an irresponsible and has a sense of entitlement . I wouldn't be surprised if he was running things out of regulation nor would I be surprised if other drugs were on the premises .

I am sorry you are such a loser, Jeff Joseph, but there must me a line forty-people-deep who want to shut you down, or worse.
How many people have gone to the police to complain about you? A hundred?
You didn't know when to stop. You are insane. You have no conscience. I feel sorry for you because you are not human: humans have empathy.
I hope you rot for a nickel or a dime. I hope you are old, ugly and gray by the time you get out.

I thought they were going to stop doing raids. Most the Raids I read about are for tax reasons.

Didn't Obama publicly state he would no longer raid dispensaries? while everyone is sleeping and assuming that everything is okay under obama, this injustice occurs regularly???

So many people claim this isnt happening... but its a reality. more people need to know about this... they need to know obama has NOT kept his word.

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

There is obviously a conflict of interest here Law makers are trying to figure a way out collecting a tax from the hard working farmers of the herb industry while the law enforcement wants to continue taxing the way they have for a long time making criminals out of innocent people!

As far as public complaints there aren't any on Record ORGANICA was helping people

lovescowbell is obviously a debtor without any conscience and just projecting...or bring a ligit complaint this is all hearsay

Jeff gave lots of people a chance, helped people and a place to live!

Thank God we don't stop and we stand up for the herb....or the government would have their way and make us all slaves
