Villaraigosa says exercise, yoga, eating better have him in a good place
Life is good these days, according to L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
He's on the treadmill more. He's sleeping better. He's about 20 pounds lighter, dabbles in yoga and has declared Mondays "meatless."
And sources tell The Times' Phil Willon that he traveled to South Carolina to meet the parents of his girlfriend, KTLA-TV reporter Lu Parker, around the Christmas holiday.Six months into his second and last term as mayor, Villaraigosa appears noticeably more at ease both at City Hall and personally.
Villaraigosa credits the change in part to his decision to forgo a run for governor this year, shedding the incessant political speculation that he acknowledges was a major distraction.
The personal fallout from his extramarital affair in 2007, which led to salacious national headlines and the breakup of his 20-year marriage, also has had time to settle both for him and for his children.
Villaraigosa said he's closer to his kids than ever before, and happily involved in a romantic relationship with Parker. She frequently appears at his side at official events.
"I'm at a great place with my family and kids, my sisters, and you could put Lu in there as well," Villaraigosa said during an interview that offers a rare and sometimes candid glimpse into the private life of a politician who had reason to be guarded in recent years.
