Off-duty LAPD officer on department motorcycle is injured in crash

January 2, 2010 |  6:02 pm

A Los Angeles Police Department motorcycle officer was injured this afternoon in a single-vehicle accident on the 405 Freeway in Long Beach.

The officer, whose name has not been released, sustained an elbow injury and was taken to a local hospital, said Long Beach Police Officer Jackie Bezart.

The investigation of the crash apparently contributed to significant traffic delays on the southbound 405 Freeway approaching Bellflower Boulevard, said California Highway Patrol Officer Monica Posada.

The incident was reported at 3:50 p.m. The officer was off-duty, said Posada, who characterized his injuries as moderate but not life-threatening.

Los Angeles police confirmed that the officer was driving a department-issued motorcycle. He might have been returning home after a shift, said Officer Bruce Borihanh, an LAPD spokesman.
