Cardinal Mahony to attend funeral for El Monte educator slain in Mexico

Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony will attend the funeral and burial services Thursday for Agustin Roberto "Bobby" Salcedo, the El Monte school official killed last week while visiting Mexico.

The private services will begin with a funeral Mass at Nativity Catholic Church in El Monte at 10 a.m.

Mahony will speak at the end of the Mass and bless the casket before accompanying the family to the burial, the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles said.

Hundreds of people attended a Rosary tonight at the church.

Salcedo, 33, and his wife, Betzy, had traveled to her hometown of Gomez Palacio and were out with friends the night before New Year’s Eve when unknown gunmen entered a bar and forced Salcedo and five other men to leave. All six were found dead outside the city of 240,000 in the state of Durango

The slaying of Salcedo, a school board member with longtime roots in El Monte, shocked residents and officials in the city east of Los Angeles.

On Monday night, thousands of people filled the bleachers at a ceremony to honor Salcedo at Mountain View High, where he was once a student and later an administrator.

My deepest condolences to the Salcedo family for the loss of their son, husband and father.
However, was this a random act of murder? I think the U.S. Embassy should launch an investigation.
