Derby Dolls to battle L.A. firefighters in charity event

Members of the L.A. Derby Dolls will battle it out on the ice Thursday against a team from the Los Angeles Fire Department in a charity broomball game.

The match begins at 9 a.m. at the outdoor ice rink at Pershing Square. Proceeds will benefit the Fireman Relief Assn.'s Widows, Orphans and Disabled Firemen's Fund, according to the department.Derby Dolls

The Dolls are among the best known of the more than 200 roller derby leagues that have operated across the country in recent years. They will be facing off against of team of firefighters from Station 9 downtown and other firehouses.

Broomball is similar to ice hockey, except that players use rubber-soled shoes and brooms to push around a ball on the ice.

The event is free, but the department said donations will be accepted.
