Man slain in Christmas night shooting spree

An 18-year-old man was killed during a Christmas night shooting rampage in the unincorporated Athens area of southern Los Angeles County that left several people injured, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Homicide detectives today were trying to determine whether the shootings were related to one another because they occurred less than half a mile apart and within several minutes.

The most serious of the attacks occurred about 9:15 p.m. in the 9300 block of Vermont Avenue, where arriving deputies found three males with gunshot wounds. They were taken to hospitals, and one of them, an 18-year-old, died at one of the hospitals.

Another shooting was reported in the 1200 block of West 98th Street, where a male was wounded. Minutes later another was reported near 102nd Street and Normandie Avenue, where another male was found with gunshot wounds. The status of those two additional victims was not known. Detectives are investigating the shootings as gang-related.
